The successful candidate will support the design, and execution of high-voltage and medium-voltage substation projects for utility, renewable energy, and industrial clients. Responsibilities include developing physical layouts, equipment arrangements, grounding systems, lightning protection systems, and construction drawing packages while coordinating closely with protection and control, civil, structural, and electrical disciplines. The ideal candidate is a self-driven engineer with strong technical skills, experience in substation design standards and industry practices, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. This is not a remote position.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform conceptual and detailed HV and MV Substation Physical/Electrical design for utilities/substations (including basic layout, electrical arrangement, one line, three-line drawings, plan-section, grounding, AC and DC system drawings)
  • Perform engineering studies and calculations
  • Perform Quality Control reviews on substation physical design projects
  • Assume the role of technical lead on projects with limited guidance
  • Create and review bill of materials for substation physical projects
  • Develop and review proposals, and scopes of work for smaller substation physical projects
  • Plan and lead client meetings (or meeting sections) relating to physical design, as required
  • Provide support for continued professional development of less experienced engineers in team, including technical guidance, and recommending training needs to the group
  • Possess excellent communication skills and the ability to interact with the internal teams and clients to meet project objectives
  • Develop leadership skills in preparation for future roles on the team
Qualifications:
  • 4+ years of relevant engineering experience in substation design.
  • Preferred (but not required): Professional Engineering (P.E.) license, or ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard design software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation and inventor.
  • Experience with grounding studies, lightning protection studies, and lighting studies.

About the Company

K

Kimley-Horn

Kimley-Horn keeps two groups of people at the center of its business: its clients and its staff. Past president Ed Vick said, "We have no reason to exist except to serve our clients." That intense focus on providing quality to the people we serve has made Kimley-Horn one of the nation's top consulting firms in every discipline we practice.

But the firm's core purpose, articulated by its leadership and lived out daily, is "to provide an environment for our people to flourish." We know that people are fulfilled, motivated, and challenged in different ways. In order to foster our individual aspirations, we support our people as they grow into roles and take on responsibilities that are important to them. Growing professionally, having fun with our colleagues, and finding satisfaction in our work are central to our way of life.

To that purpose we add core values: "honesty, integrity, and ethics; exceptional client service; high expectations; sharing and caring; sustained profitability." Our core values and core purpose provide a foundation for the way we approach our business. Our vision is long-term and our expectation is always to perform with quality, for the sake of both groups at the center of our firm.

Through their work, our people discover untapped talents and interests. At Kimley-Horn we work hard to allow that to happen. We have college students who started as traffic engineers now working on ITS projects. We have former administrative assistants who are now human resources professionals and former marketing coordinators who are now transportation planners.

We provide the environment. We want you to take advantage of it and flourish!
