Overview

SUMMARY:

Coordinates instructional support activities in the Physical Sciences Department. Coordinates laboratory and technical support for Physics, Astronomy, Geology, Oceanography, and Atmospheric Science courses; provides professional and technical support requiring knowledge of physical science disciplines.

TITLE: Physical Sciences Instruction Support Technician

CLASSIFICATION: Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 3

SALARY: Range 47

WORKLOAD: 40 hours/week

SCHEDULE: Typically Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. during the academic year; Monday-Thursday, 10-hour days during summer Friday closures. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.

Duties & Responsibilities

Laboratory Program Coordination

  • Coordinate laboratory preparation and technical support for Physical Sciences courses, including laboratory- and field-based instruction.
  • Collaborate with faculty to develop, test, and improve laboratory procedures, instructional activities, demonstrations, and scientific models.
  • Plan laboratory preparation assignments and schedules to ensure that materials, equipment, and supplies are available when needed.
  • Advise faculty of potential problems with laboratory activities and recommend modifications to improve feasibility, reliability, or safety.
  • Write, edit, and maintain laboratory procedures, equipment instructions, handouts, manuals, and other instructional-support documentation.
  • Coordinate laboratory and storeroom operations, including the allocation and use of equipment, materials, and space.
  • Collaborate with Engineering laboratory technicians on joint projects and the safe, effective use of shared spaces and equipment.

Equipment, Materials & Inventory Management

  • Inspect, test, adjust, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair laboratory and instructional-support equipment, including complex repairs within the employee's training and available facilities; coordinate vendor repair when needed.
  • Design, construct, and test specialized equipment used for laboratory experiments and lecture demonstrations in collaboration with faculty.
  • Prepare, assemble, set up, and put away equipment, materials, and supplies for laboratory instruction, demonstrations, and class projects.
  • Evaluate equipment and supply needs, research products and specifications, and make purchasing recommendations.
  • Purchase approved equipment, materials, and supplies using a procurement card or ctcLink requisition; receive items and maintain required purchasing and receipt records.
  • Maintain accurate inventories of equipment, hazardous materials, and laboratory supplies; support annual inventory, equipment checkout, and surplus processes.
  • Coordinate the storage, maintenance, charging, updating, and availability of laboratory equipment, computers, sensors, probes, and materials.

Laboratory Safety & Compliance

  • Coordinate the safe preparation, handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and other hazardous materials used in Physical Sciences instruction.
  • Monitor Physical Sciences laboratories, storerooms, and work areas for compliance with College safety policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with faculty and other employees to develop and improve safe laboratory procedures and practices.
  • Identify and communicate safety concerns, equipment problems, and laboratory conditions requiring corrective action.
  • Maintain safety procedures, Safety Data Sheets, records, labels, and other documentation necessary for compliant laboratory operations.
  • Support emergency preparedness and response practices for Physical Sciences laboratories and storerooms.

Instruction, Training & Technical Support

  • Train students, faculty, and employees in laboratory techniques, specialized procedures, equipment operation, and safe work practices.
  • Provide technical guidance in specialty areas such as scientific instrumentation, sensor-based data collection, and methods of physical analysis.
  • Assist and advise students with laboratory assignments, scientific procedures, equipment use, and class projects in coordination with faculty.
  • Demonstrate laboratory procedures and equipment use in coordination with faculty.
  • Provide technical and instructional support during laboratory activities while faculty retain responsibility for instruction, assessment, and course supervision.

Operational Continuity & Collaboration

  • Develop and maintain written procedures for recurring laboratory preparation, equipment maintenance, inventory, purchasing, and safety functions.
  • Cross-train with other Natural Sciences laboratory-support employees and, when assigned and appropriately trained, provide limited backup coverage to maintain essential operations.
  • Coordinate laboratory-support work and communicate priorities, schedules, and operational needs with faculty and division leadership.
  • Perform the full range of duties assigned to lower-level Instruction and Classroom Support Technician classifications.
  • Participate in departmental planning related to laboratory facilities, equipment, instructional support, and operational improvements.

General Duties

  • Support the goals and operations of the department, division, and College.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental operations and campus needs.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience (or equivalent combination of):

  • A Bachelor's Degree with major study in a physical science AND
  • Two years of full-time experience as an Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 2 or equivalent; OR equivalent education and experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of physical science laboratory practices, materials, equipment, and instructional procedures.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety requirements, including the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting scientific instruments and equipment.
  • Skill in organizing laboratory operations, inventories, schedules, purchasing records, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to develop and improve laboratory procedures in collaboration with faculty.
  • Ability to train and provide technical guidance to students, faculty, and laboratory-support employees.
  • Ability to work effectively with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using Windows and macOS computers with laboratory sensors, probes, data-collection interfaces, and scientific equipment.
  • Computer skills supporting word processing, data analysis, imaging, equipment documentation, and inventory management.

Terms of Employment

  • Overtime eligible - FLSA non-exempt.
  • Full-time, 12-month position; schedule may be adjusted for summer operations and occasional evening or weekend assignments.
  • Position is subject to Everett Community College policies and procedures and the applicable WFSE collective bargaining agreement.
  • Performance will be evaluated after a six-month probationary period and annually.
