Job Summary
The Physical Therapist Technician assists licensed Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants in providing high-quality patient care in an outpatient orthopedic setting. This role supports clinical operations by preparing treatment areas, supervising prescribed exercises under the direction of licensed staff, maintaining equipment, and ensuring an efficient and positive patient experience. The PT Tech plays a key role in promoting a safe, organized, and welcoming rehabilitation environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare treatment areas and equipment prior to patient appointments.
  • Assist patients with set up of therapeutic exercises and activities as directed by a licensed Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant.
  • Clean, sanitize, and maintain treatment tables, exercise equipment, and clinical areas according to infection control protocols.
  • Ensure treatment areas are organized, stocked, and ready for patient care.
  • Escort patients to and from treatment areas and assist with patient flow throughout the clinic.
  • Educate patients on proper use of exercise equipment as instructed by the supervising therapist.
  • Assist with applying modalities (e.g., hot/cold packs) as permitted by state regulations and clinic policy.
  • Document non-clinical patient information and treatment setup as directed.
  • Perform administrative tasks including scheduling assistance, answering phones, filing, and inventory management as needed.
  • Support therapists with clinic operations to maximize patient care efficiency.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Participate in staff meetings and ongoing training as required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Athletic Training, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare, fitness, or rehabilitation setting is preferred but not required.
  • Current CPR certification or willingness to obtain upon hire.
  • Interest in physical therapy, healthcare, or rehabilitation careers is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions from licensed clinicians.
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and exercise principles preferred.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Basic computer proficiency and familiarity with electronic medical records is a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to assist patients with mobility and transfers.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, and repetitive movements.
  • Visual and auditory ability sufficient to observe patients and communicate effectively.

Work Environment

  • Outpatient orthopedic physical therapy clinic.
  • Frequent interaction with patients recovering from orthopedic injuries, surgeries, and musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Fast-paced, team-oriented environment focused on exceptional patient care and outcomes.
