The Opportunity
The Division of Acute Care Surgery at Corewell Health West is seeking its twentieth acute care surgeon to join a well established and growing service line at one of the busiest acute care surgery programs in the country.
We are looking for a colleague who is drawn to complex, high volume work and who wants to help impact a program that continues to evolve. Our surgeons find meaningful ways to contribute beyond the clinical work, and we support them in doing so.
Who We Are
The Division is comprised of nineteen surgeons and nine advanced practice providers who care for the traumatically injured, critically ill, burned, and emergency general surgery patients at Butterworth Hospital, an ACS verified Level I Adult Trauma Center for thirty-five consecutive years.
Our Commitment to Verification and Continuous Improvement
We view performance improvement and patient safety as the mechanism through which a program gets better over time, and our verification work reflects that. We ask every member of the team to take part.
Understanding our opportunities through objective data is central to how we work, and our surgeons are encouraged to engage with that data and to help us act on it.
Practice Structure
The hired surgeon will rotate through trauma, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care.
Five of our surgeons provide burn care. While we are not currently recruiting a burn surgeon, all of our surgeons participate in the acute resuscitation of the burn patient and in the care of the burn patient in the surgical ICU setting.
We do not work twenty four hour shifts. Coverage follows a 10 and 14 hour split, with day shifts, night shifts, weekends, and holidays distributed equitably across the year.
Education and Academics
As one of the main teaching hospitals for Michigan State University, the Division supports an ACGME accredited Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, currently two fellows, and a General Surgery Residency that graduates six residents each year. Opportunities for the education of medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as clinical and translational research, are abundant, and teaching is an expected and valued part of the role.
The Colleague We Are Looking For
Board certified in General Surgery and in Surgical Critical Care (Eligible is OK if you are a new graduate). Beyond credentials, we are looking for a surgeon who:
Why Our Team Stays
We have had essentially no surgeon or advanced practice provider turnover in recent years, which may be the most useful metric we can tell you about what it is like to work here. The volume is high and the cases are complex, but the team is deeply engaged, colleagues support one another, and the work is genuinely rewarding. We are a family and we have a good time providing excellent care.
If you are looking for a collaborative, innovative, data informed team where your contributions are visible and your growth is supported, we would welcome a conversation.
