Job summary:
The Division of Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery of New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center is founded on the principle that treatment of hepatobiliary and pancreatic disorders demands a commitment to collaboration in patient care. Duties and responsibilities:
1. Assess patient health status by interview and chart review. Document patient care services by charting in patient’s and department records.
2. Performs physical examinations and provides treatment. Recognizes and evaluates patients who require immediate attention and when necessary initiates medical treatment without direct supervision.
3. Determines abnormal conditions by administering or ordering diagnostic tests and laboratory studies; Follows-up on X-rays, CTs scans, MRIs, laboratory data. Interprets and acts on diagnostic test results.
4. Provides follow up care including prescribing or/and appropriate adjustment of medications to patients in accordance with stablished protocols.
5. Pre-op work up, pre-op clearance and patient optimization prior to surgery. Basic knowledge of ECG, lab data and other diagnostic tests interpretation.
6. Postsurgical patient care including wound care and drain management.
7. Develops and implements patient management plans, records procedures and visit notes. Accountable for outstanding patient continuity of care.
8. Evidence of ability to maintain interpersonal relationships, communicate appropriately to others and work effectively and efficiently to solve problems.
9. Able to work independently and make sound clinical decisions when appropriate.
10. Participates in team meetings, symposiums and interdisciplinary weekly conferences to enhance patient care and outcomes.
11. Preview new patients to assess multidisciplinary needs.
12. Coordinates patient plan of care. Reassesses and modifies plan of care as necessary to achieve surgical and health goals. Initiates referrals to specialty services and fosters continuity of care. Collaborates with other caregivers to ensure continuity of care for patients, and attain the greatest efficacy in the use of hospital resources in managing patients.
13. Be primary point of communication for patients, family members and referring doctors. Be able to keep supervising physician updated about patients’ status in a relevant and efficacious way.
14. Must have excellent communication and written skills.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum education:
Requires bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education or experience, master’s preferred
Minimum related experience:
1-3 years of related experience required
Minimum licensing requirements:
Licensure as a Physician Assistant by the State of New York
Minimum certification requirements:
PA certification. DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) registration number, if applicable in assigned area
Minimum computer skills:
Intermediate MS Office skills EMR (Epic)
General skills:
• Ability to perform comprehensive history and physical examination.
• Ability to manage and coordinate a patient caseload.
• Work within a collaborative agreement/protocol with a physician and health care team.
• Demonstrate leadership ability to manage patients and interact effectively with peers and physicians.
