Job Description
Basic Purpose:
Positions in this job family perform professional medical services in a state hospital, institution, school, or facility for patients in state custody or care under the supervision of an Oklahoma licensed physician. Incumbents will be responsible for the overall primary medical care and treatment of patients assigned. Additionally, incumbents may provide specialized medical care and treatment in the diagnosis and treatment of illness or injuries relating to the recognized specialty areas for a Physician Assistant, certified (PA-C).

This is the entry level for this job family where employees will gain proficiency in the knowledge and practical application of federal, state, and agency laws, rules, practices, polices, and guidelines in the medical treatment of a patient in state custody or care.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of medicine; physical, mental, and psychiatric symptoms and treatments; methods and procedures of laboratory, x-ray and other diagnosis techniques; pharmaceutical agents, their usage and counterindications; the languages used in pharmacy prescription writing; human anatomy, physiology, and chemistry; minor surgical procedures and techniques; safety and sanitation practices; and the uses of medicines of illness.
Skills required include the skill in establishing and maintaining a working relationship; interviewing and obtaining relevant medical and psychiatric information; instructing clients; exercising initiative; working in both a team environment and independently; exercising sound judgment; analyzing complex situations; adopting appropriate courses of action.
Abilities required include the ability to develop therapeutic or treatment plans; apply emergency and first aid measures; and to successfully diagnose and treat patients.
Education and Experience:
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of certification as a physician assistant by the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision with delegated prescriptive authority for Schedules II, III, IV, and V drugs and registration with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration and the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs and national certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants.
