JOB SUMMARY

Under the administrative supervision of the Pediatric Department Chair and collaboration with Attending Physician, provides exceptional care to a diverse patient population with complex, acute, critical, and chronic health conditions. The Physician Assistant will practice in the Pediatric ICU, Neonatal ICU, the step-down unit, and the general Pediatric service settings whereby the patients require complex monitoring and therapies, high intensity intervention, or continuous vigilance within the range of high acuity care. Performs duties within the legal guidelines of the Cook County Health & Hospitals System (CCHHS) policies.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Provides independent care for a population of patients from neonate to age 18 as delineatedin the collaborative agreement.
  • Provides cross coverage in the Neonatal ICU, the Pediatric ICU, the step-down unit andgeneral Pediatric services.
  • Provides independent pediatric/neonatal physical assessment; obtains a comprehensivehealth history and physical; documents progress notes; prepares discharge summaries asrequired.
  • Identifies significant health and medical risk factors and documents in the EMR.
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic tests to differentiate between normal variations andabnormal deviations; refers patients with abnormal results to consult with a physician.
  • In collaboration with the physician, develops a treatment plan.
  • Prescribes and dispenses of legal drugs and controlled substances as delegated.
  • Acts as a liaison and collaborates with physicians, nursing staff, and house staff regularly toensure quality and safe patient care.
  • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as delegated; central vascular access, lumbarpunctures, endotracheal intubation chest tube replacement, peripheral vascular access,conscious sedation, intraosseous access, management of Non-Invasive Positive PressureVentilation (NIPPV) and Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventilation (IPPV).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission (ARC) Physician Assistant program is required
  • Certified Physician Assistant or the ability to obtain certification two (2) weeks prior to startingemployment is required
  • Licensed as a Physician Assistant in the State of Illinois or the ability to obtain Illinois statelicense two (2) weeks prior to starting employment is required
  • Board Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)or have the ability to obtain certification prior to starting employment is required
  • Valid Illinois Controlled Substances License (ILCS) OR have the ability to obtain license sixmonths of starting employment is required
  • Valid licensure with the Federal DEA OR the ability to obtain license six months prior to starting employment is required
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification is preferred
  • Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) certification is preferred
