Summary:

As a clinician and in collaboration with physicians, takes medical histories, performs physical examinations, and

performs specified procedures. The APP refers patients for specialty consultation. The APP works in the Emergency Department at York Street, the Emergency Department satellite at Guilford, or in the Emergency Department at St Raphael''s Campus.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provides care to general Emergency Department patients including those with acute and ambulatory problems.2. Discusses each case with the triage classification as "acute" with the Emergency Department Attending Physicians. The plan for the patient is discussed and executed. The Attending Physician evaluates all Triage level II and documents on them as well. The APP consults with community medical staff physicians as appropriate

and discusses each patients evaluation and plan with the primary care provider. The APP may provide care to ambulatory and urgent care patients without direct physician supervision.3. Documents a complete medical record on all patients whom they provide care for.4. Practices within the policies and procedures of the Emergency Department and YNHHS5. Performs procedures including (but not limited to) lumbar puncture, suturing and repair of wounds, minor burn care; arterial blood gas sampling; incision and drainage of abscess; thoracentesis; advanced cardiac life support procedures; paracentesis; urinary bladder catheterization; gastric lavage.6. Refers patients for consultation and initiates consultation and promotes follow up7. Recommends patients for admission to attending physician.8. Orders medications including narcotics. Orders durable medical equipment9. Writes prescriptions.10. Orders laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging and other diagnostic tests appropriate to Emergency Department care.11. . The APP will be assigned to the Emergency Department at York Street, Chapel street, and/or the Guilford satellite. The shifts assigned may be day, evening, nights and/or weekends.12. The APP needs to attend 75% of Department Staff meetings and participates in departmental groups and committees. They may be requested to chair groups and committees. They may also be required to participate on hospital groups and committees as representative of the Department of Emergency Services.13. Provides clinical instruction to Physician Assistant students, Emergency Medicine residents; and Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic Students as well as Nurse Practitioner Students.14. Attends and documents 100 hours continue medical education every 2 years

EDUCATION:

Bachelor''s Degree and graduation from an approved Physician''s Associate program required or Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner Program. Current Connecticut PA or APRN license (or eligible.

EXPERIENCE:

Three (3) to five (5) years of patient care experience as a Physician Associate or Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner Program preferred.

LICENSURE:

PA or APRN Required (or Eligible)

SPECIAL_SKILLS:

Excellent interpersonal, communication and leadership skills.. Maintains current and active credential by the

National Committee for Certification of Physicians Assistants. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to

provide quality care appropriate to the Emergency Department patients

ACCOUNTABILITY:

A physician supervisor is assigned. The APP practices within legal guidelines of the APP profession and Connecticut law.

COMPLEXITY:

Emergency Medicine requires procedural as well as assessment skills. The range and scope of emergency medicine is quite broad and requires expertise in many areas of medicine.

PHYSICAL_DEMAND:

All Physician Associates are required to participate in the on call system as defined by the department.
