I. PURPOSE OF JOB:

To perform, under the responsibility and supervision of the surgeon, diagnostic and therapeutic tasks to allow the physician to extend his services through the more effective use of his knowledge in the sphere of decision-making required to establish diagnosis and to plan therapy. He/she may assist in gathering the data necessary in implementing the therapeutic plan of the surgeon. A major role will be as a patient’s advocate in the medical care system serving as confidant, advisor and liaison between patients and physicians.

 

II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

A. Assists the surgeon in the preoperative care and work-up of patients.

B. Assists the surgeon in each surgical procedure.

C. Participates in postoperative care of patients, being especially knowledgeable in the recognition of postoperative complications.

D. Performs therapeutic procedures and assignments as directed by the surgeon and as indicated by his/her training and experience.


QUALIFICATIONS:

A. Education: Bachelor of Science degree in a physical science from an accredited institution required. Must be a graduate of an accredited physician assistant program. Must complete courses of training for both basic and advanced cardiac life support.

B. Experience: Two years recent experience in cardiothoracic surgery preferred. Recent Board eligible graduate acceptable.

C. Other Skills: Must be certified or eligible by the NCCPA and Pennsylvania State Board of Medical Education and Licensure.

· Knowledge of pre-existing conditions that may affect surgical procedure.

· Working knowledge of cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures and anatomy.

· Basic understanding of major surgical complications and their treatment.

· Ability to harvest all native conduits used for coronary bypass grafting.

· Knowledge of cardiac patient postoperative management.

     D. Training time required once hired: 6 months
