Summary

The Division of Surgical Oncology in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery is seeking a Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner who will provide care to Colorectal Surgical patients under the direction of a physician in the outpatient setting. Under the direction of the supervising physician, this position will evaluate and assess patients to determine treatment plans, coordinate care with multidisciplinary services, and evaluate post operative patients independently. Candidate will be expected to provide clinical excellence and scholarly enthusiasm.

Job Duties

• Obtains detailed history and performs physical examinations.
• Orders x-rays, electrocardiograms, laboratory tests, and other diagnostic images or procedures, and interprets results.
• Formulates an assessment and plan; orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic tests in coordinator with faculty supervising physician.
• Perform pre-operative tasks such as reviewing pending labs and imaging results, and screening upcoming clinics, as well as post-operative phone calls.
• Participates in Multidisciplinary Conferences such as Tumor Board and Inflammatory Bowel Disease conference (CME Eligible).
• Coordinates with inpatient team on inpatients nearing discharge, develop care plans, and provide detailed counseling on home care and clinic follow-up.
• Evaluate and treat postoperative and/or established patients independently as delegated in the clinic.
• Instruct patients on prescribed therapeutic regimens, home care and health maintenance.
• Administers such therapeutic procedures as injections, suturing, and wound care.
• Performs wound care procedures such as suture removal, staple removal, drain removal, and dressing changes.
• Perform other duties as assigned; duties may change based on service needs for Surgical Oncology.

Minimum Qualifications

Required qualifications for Physician Assistant:

• Education Required: Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies.
• Experience Required: None Required.
• Certification/Licenses/Registration:
• Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board.
• The National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistance (NCCPA) board certification.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Required qualifications for Nurse Practitioner:

• Education Required: Master's degree in Nursing
• Experience Required: None Required.
• Certifications/Licenses/Registration:
• Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing.
• Current Texas Licensure as an Advance Practice Nurse (APRN-NP).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
