Job Overview
This role is situated within the Department of Primary Care at our community-based medical facility in Williamsburg, VA. The position entails executing various medical responsibilities, including conducting physical examinations, managing follow-up appointments for health concerns, performing fitness-for-duty assessments, overseeing medical boards, and completing flight physicals and aeromedical summaries. Candidates must hold board certification or be eligible for certification in Family Medicine.
The work will be carried out under the general guidance of the Chief of the Department of Primary Care, allowing for significant autonomy in technical execution. Consultation in specialized areas is available upon request. Patient care responsibilities will adhere to the full spectrum of requirements set forth by relevant military regulations and the facility's leadership.
It is important to note that federal civilian healthcare providers are not required to carry medical malpractice liability insurance, as they are protected under the Federal Tort Claims Act (28 U.S.C. § 1346(b)) while performing their job duties.
Responsibilities
- As a Physician specializing in Family Medicine, you will:
- Be board certified or eligible in Family Medicine and hold Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, demonstrating the ability to perform protocols independently.
- Take responsibility for the care of an assigned patient panel, providing first-contact, continuous, and comprehensive primary care for individuals of all ages, in line with current care standards, the patient-centered medical home model, and military policies.
- Deliver care primarily in an outpatient clinic setting, accommodating walk-ins or additional appointments as necessary.
- Offer care, guidance, and referral coordination through telephone and secure messaging as appropriate.
- Meet departmental productivity targets while providing diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic services.
- Conduct military-specific medical tasks, including periodic physical exams, follow-ups for health issues identified during Post-Deployment Health Reassessment, and fitness-for-duty evaluations.
- Perform procedures within the scope of practice for the Department of Primary Care and acquire proficiency in necessary computer systems for daily operations.
Qualifications
To be eligible for this position, candidates must fulfill the educational and experiential criteria outlined below. Experience encompasses both paid and unpaid roles, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, community, student, social). All qualifying experience, including volunteer work, will be considered. Your resume should clearly detail your relevant experience; if qualifying through education, transcripts will be required as part of your application.
Basic Requirements for Physician (Family Practice)
- Degree: A Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from an accredited institution in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by recognized bodies such as the American Medical Association or the American Osteopathic Association. For foreign medical degrees, equivalency to accredited U.S. schools must be demonstrated through certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.
- Licensure: Candidates must possess a current, unrestricted license as a Physician from a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.
- Graduate Training: Following the attainment of a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, candidates must have completed at least one year of supervised clinical experience, such as an internship or the first year of a residency program in an accredited institution.
Additional Qualifications for GP-14 Position
- Candidates must have successfully completed accredited residency training in Family Medicine and possess equivalent experience and training totaling at least four years. Experience cannot substitute for the required residency training.
Compensation
If selected for the Physician role, a salary quote will not be provided during the initial job offer. The salary determination process will commence after the acceptance of the initial offer, involving the Activity Compensation Panel to establish your starting salary based on base pay and market pay. The salary for physician roles is tiered according to specialty, grade, and location, with the following range:
- Tier 1: $115,587 - $243,000
