Job Overview

 

Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing, MN, is seeking a Hospitalist Physician to join our inpatient care team. This opportunity offers a flexible schedule, competitive compensation, and the ability to provide high-quality hospital-based care in a collaborative, community-focused medical center.

This position is ideal for a physician who values work-life balance while maintaining a meaningful inpatient practice. Hospitalists work approximately 14 shifts per month, with the opportunity for a flexible schedule and the ability to work only 21–22 weeks per year. Additional shifts may also be available for providers.

Our physicians and advanced practice providers are supported by a strong multi-specialty clinic structure, collaborating with colleagues in pediatrics, internal medicine, otolaryngology, orthopedics, general surgery, ENT, urology, and sports medicine. Consulting physicians are available in neurology, cardiology, and oncology. Our partnership with the University of Minnesota provides access to additional subspecialists for consultations and outreach.

The clinic is affiliated with Fairview Range Medical Center, the largest medical center in the region, featuring state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical technology. Services include:

  • 24-hour Emergency Department with board-certified emergency medicine physicians
    • Comprehensive laboratory and diagnostic imaging
    • 24-hour respiratory therapy
    • Radiation therapy
    • Intensive Care Unit and Medical/Surgical Pediatric floor
    • Physical, occupational, and speech therapy
    • Cardiac rehabilitation
    • Specialty clinics including diabetes management

Key Responsibilities

 

Clinical Care

  • Provide high-quality inpatient medical care for hospitalized patients.
    • Evaluate, diagnose, and manage acute and chronic medical conditions in the hospital setting.
    • Conduct daily rounds and develop individualized treatment plans.
    • Coordinate care with nursing, pharmacy, care management, therapy services, consulting specialists, and other members of the care team.
    • Admit, manage, and discharge patients in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
    • Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and care transitions.
    • Ensure appropriate documentation in Epic EMR.
    • Support safe and efficient transitions of care, including discharge planning and follow-up coordination.

Hospitalist Practice

  • Work collaboratively with another provider to manage an average daily patient census of approximately 14–24 patients between two providers.
    • Participate in management of approximately 5–10 admissions per day.
    • Provide inpatient coverage according to the established hospitalist schedule.
    • Collaborate with Emergency Department providers, specialists, primary care physicians, and advanced practice providers.
    • Support quality, safety, and patient experience initiatives within the inpatient setting.
    • Participate in department meetings, clinical improvement efforts, and care coordination initiatives as needed.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited institution.
    • Board-certified or board-eligible in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or related specialty.
    • Active Minnesota medical license, or ability to obtain.
    • DEA registration.
    • Strong clinical judgment and ability to manage a broad range of inpatient conditions.
    • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
    • Commitment to patient-centered care and team-based practice.

Preferred

  • Prior hospitalist or inpatient medicine experience.
    • Experience working in a rural or community hospital setting.
    • Familiarity with Epic EMR.
    • Comfort managing admissions, daily rounding, and discharge planning in a collaborative care environment.
