    Job Description

    Position Summary

    Provides immediate, specialized care to infants, children, and adolescents experiencing acute illnesses and injuries. This physician works in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment and collaborates closely with nursing, pediatric subspecialists, surgeons, ancillary services, and other healthcare professionals to deliver safe, timely, and family-centered care.

    Core Responsibilities

    • Evaluate and treat pediatric patients presenting with a broad range of medical, traumatic, and behavioral health emergencies, including respiratory distress, seizures, infections, toxic exposures, and acute exacerbations of chronic conditions.

    • Perform rapid assessments and initiate appropriate stabilization and life-saving interventions.

    • Perform emergency procedures such as airway management and intubation, vascular access, lumbar puncture, fracture reduction, wound management, and other procedures within the physician's scope of practice.

    • Order and interpret laboratory studies, radiographs, ultrasound examinations, and other diagnostic testing.

    • Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans for pediatric patients across a wide range of acuity levels.

    • Stabilize critically ill or injured patients and determine the appropriate disposition, including discharge, hospital admission, intensive care, or transfer to another facility.

    • Coordinate care with pediatric subspecialists, surgeons, hospitalists, intensivists, primary care clinicians, and other members of the multidisciplinary care team.

    • Provide timely consultation and clinical support to referring physicians and healthcare facilities when appropriate.

    • Supervise and educate residents, medical students, advanced practice clinicians, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team.

    • Foster a collaborative environment that supports professional development and continuous learning.

    Clinical Quality, Patient Safety, and Experience

    • Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, anticipated outcomes, follow-up care, and preventive measures.

    • Promote communication strategies that strengthen patient and family engagement in clinical decision-making.

    • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely medical records.

    • Practice in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, hospital policies, clinical standards, and ethical requirements.

    • Participate in quality improvement, peer review, patient safety, and clinical performance initiatives.

    • Identify opportunities to improve clinical processes, efficiency, patient outcomes, and the overall care experience.

    • Collaborate with nursing, ancillary services, and hospital leadership to support coordinated, efficient, and patient-centered care.

    • Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and respect in all interactions with patients, families, colleagues, and staff.

    Qualifications

    • Medical degree from an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school.

    • Completion of an accredited Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship.

    • Board certified or board eligible in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

    • Eligible to obtain and maintain an unrestricted Tennessee medical license.

    • Eligible to obtain and maintain hospital medical staff privileges.

    • Current certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life support, Advanced Trauma Life Support, or the ability to obtain certification as required.

    • Strong clinical judgment and the ability to make timely decisions in high-acuity situations.

    • Excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.

    • Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced and high-pressure clinical environment.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience practicing in a high-volume or high-acuity pediatric emergency department.

    • Familiarity with current pediatric emergency medicine protocols and evidence-based clinical pathways.

    • Experience with resident, fellow, medical student, or interdisciplinary education.

    • Interest or experience in quality improvement, patient safety, clinical leadership, research, or program development.

    • Light lifting, pushing and pulling is required for 10-20 lbs occasionally and frequent moving of objects of less than 10 lbs is required. Frequent sitting with some walking, standing, squatting, bending and reaching is required. Keyboard/computer use and/or repetitive motions may be required.
