SUMMARY
The Pipe Layer is responsible for assembling, connecting, and installing pipe systems for wet utilities, storm or sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains, and/or dry utilities, power cable communications, natural gas, and conduit. Our pipelayers ensure the ground is prepped on grade and meets specifications for slope, shade, and alignment. Pipe layers must be proficient in the installation of water, sanitary, and storm sewer systems, and/or power cable communications and natural gas pipe systems. This includes service connections, mechanical or gasket fittings, including valves, tees, wyes, bends, couplings, saddles, and ARVs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Directs the Pipe Laborer on what tools are needed in the trench, the length of the pipe, and how to cut the pipe • Communicates with the operator about the alignment of the pipe by using hand signals to ensure the proper depth • Digs trenches with trenching tools • Understands trench safety requirements, soil types, and use of protective systems • Slides pipe into trenches • Inserts spaces in between or around pipes • Pulls out defective or misaligned pipe • Cutting, aligning, and joining sections of pipe • Corrects alignments with sledgehammers • Inspects places where pipes are fitted together to ensure pipes are spaced out properly and according to specifications • Lays pipe for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains • Seals joints by mechanical means, boltswrenches • Ensures pipes are installed and sloped or leveled correctly using transit levels, grade rods, or lasers • Assists the Pipe Supervisor with planning out the jobs by reviewing blueprints • Drills holes into pipes for auxiliary lines • Other related or general labor duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
• Education and/or Experience: 3-5 years of experience in underground pipe laying with at least 2 years in road construction. Strong knowledge of pipe laying techniques. Dependability and ability to work effectively as part of a team. • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to type, handle, or feel, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit. Out of town travel and work may be required. Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat, and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt. Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
