EDUCATION:

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Completion of two years of study at an accredited college or university of higher education and/or possess an Associate's Degree or higher from a college or university (Required for Employment in Title I Schools Only)

One month related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Bilingual preferred

CERTIFICATION:

Paraprofessional Certification as required by the State Board and the District

High School Diplomas and college/university degrees must be obtained from an accredited program or university approved by the United States Department of Education and the Texas Education Agency.

PRIMARY PURPOSE SUMMARY:

Assist the classroom teacher by reinforcing instruction with students and monitoring/supervising students during their daily activities. Paraprofessionals may provide instruction provided they are working under the direct supervision of a "highly qualified teacher" (Title I Schools Only).

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Reinforces instruction for students under the supervision of the teacher.

  2. Assists children with making healthy food selections.

  3. Reinforces self-help skills and table manners during supervision of breakfast and lunch.

  4. Assists/supervises the arrival and dismissal of students.

  5. Assists the teacher with student assessment.

  6. Escorts individual students to the nurse, office and other school locations as needed.

  7. Assists teacher in gathering and preparing materials.

  8. Assists teacher in preparing for class assignments and daily lessons.

  9. Assists/supervises outdoor activities.

  10. Maintains confidentiality of information.

  11. Reports to work on time every day

  12. Performs all other tasks and duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work well with children
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
  • Ability to write simple correspondence
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include peripheral vision.
