Job Description

The Planner I performs professional work in County planning and development.

Essential Functions:

  • Conducts research on proposed planning projects, County ordinances, and State and Federal regulations related to planning, zoning, and land development.
  • Processes applications and enters them into the applicable database. Tracks and maintains planning projects as they move from staff level to Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and County Council.
  • Prepares public meeting agenda and minutes.
  • Drafts and produces all applicable public notices related to planning activities.
  • Writes updates to County ordinances related to planning, zoning, and land development.
  • Prepares reports and graphic display materials based on research and recommendations.
  • Prepare staff reports for the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals.
  • Assists with public meetings and public hearings as required.
  • Responds to public inquiries related to items appearing before Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and County Council.
  • Serves as a planner for the Florence Area Transportation Study and assists with transportation planning and data collection.
  • Receives, reviews, and prepares and/or submits a variety of finance related documents, such as: travel forms, billing invoices, purchase requisitions, budget documents, expenditure reports, work orders, and other related documents
  • Assist the Director with preparing, submitting, and tracking the department’s annual budget.
  • Receives, reviews, and prepares documents related to the tracking of the department’s time sheet and leave request.
  • Operates a variety of office equipment and County vehicle.
  • Performs various clerical duties as necessary, including but not limited to typing, copying, filing documents, answering the telephone, mailing notices, scheduling meetings, etc. 

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Assists in the zoning division as needed.
  • Assists in the Lake City satellite office as needed.
  • Attends meetings, seminars, and conferences as appropriate.
  • Performs all other related duties as required. 

Qualifications: Education and Work Experience

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in city and regional planning, economics, engineering, or public administration supplemented by one to two years of planning experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
