Position Overview

Salary Range: $31.2799 - $39.8747/hour. Salary reflects Step 1 and Step 6 of a 7-step pay scale. Salary at hiring will be dependent upon the applicants education, experience, and training.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This schedule may vary based on operational needs.

Job Summary:

This position performs industrial electrical, instrumentation and electronics maintenance. Under general direction personnel in this position perform a variety of skilled work involved in installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, replacement and calibration of industrial class electrical and electronic equipment, plant automation systems and process control equipment.

Scope of Responsibility:

Process-level decision making: sets precedent within limits and/or administers operating rules and procedures under management guidance. Performs advanced troubleshooting or analysis; problems require interpretation of data using generally prescribed procedures. Failures and successes impact the department or functional operations, with moderate financial impact on the overall organization. Provides technical direction to other team personnel on assigned tasks or projects. Requires frequent interaction to provide basic information and/or occasional interaction requiring detailed procedural explanations or technical responses, where relationships are with other functional work units or teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Plant Maintenance Electrician will be performing the full range of duties as assigned, exercising initiative and working independently, and frequently interpreting codes, procedures and safety policies as applicable to assigned work.

Duties and Functions

• Performs skilled electrical, electronic, automation and process control systems installation, diagnostics, preventative maintenance, repair and replacement activities for the City's water and wastewater facilities and systems.
• Plans work projects; prepares estimates of time and materials needed to perform assigned repairs and maintenance; ensures adequate materials and supplies are available for proper performance of assigned work; assists in maintaining inventory of equipment, tools, parts, and supplies used in the electrical/instrumentation activities.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), programmable logic controllers (PLC) and other automation components.
• Performs electrical calibrations on systems and instrumentation.
• Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs, where appropriate, failures in control systems, machinery and equipment, branch circuits; electrical distribution systems, communications, instrumentation, and other electrical systems in the water and wastewater systems.
• Performs electrical preventative maintenance on generator systems, electrical switchgear, electric actuators and other devices and equipment requiring scheduled electrical preventative maintenance.
• Safely operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs medium-voltage class switchgear and motor drives (4,160V - 12,500V).
• Installs, maintains, and repairs radio and telephone communication systems, cameras, security systems, and other related devices.
• Installs, troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs wireless, copper and fiber optic network media and equipment.
• Operates a variety of tools and equipment including hand tools, shop tools, diagnostic tools and equipment, electrical calibration equipment, electrical safety equipment, vehicular equipment and other specialized equipment used in the installation, servicing, repair and replacement of electrical, electronic, and automation systems.
• Leadworker Plant Maintenance Electrician may train and technically oversee electrical maintenance personnel.
• Understands and employs the automated maintenance management scheduling and tracking systems employed by the Water Treatment and Wastewater Treatment Divisions.
• Prepares electrical schematics; make additions, corrections and modifications to electrical drawings.
• Knowledgeable in current electrical code and properly apply requirements to covered work as applicable.
• Employs safe work practices, identifies electrical hazards, and properly uses appropriate safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with regulations and operational guidance.
• Participates in revising, maintaining, and documenting computer programs relating to programmable logic controllers, field instruments, remote display terminals, and data acquisition systems.
• Knowledgeable in water and wastewater practices and processes such that electrical issues that affect or interfere with operations are immediately identified and coordinated with operational staff and management
• Observes activity in and around the buildings and grounds and notifies proper personnel when required. Reviews buildings and grounds for safety hazards or problems and notifies proper personnel.

Qualifications and Skills

Required Qualifications and Skills:

• High school diploma or GED
• Two (2) years of formal training beyond high school
• Six (6) years of related work experience in electrical and electronic diagnostics, installation, repair, and maintenance
• A valid Montana driver's license or the ability to obtain within thirty (30) days of employment
• A state-issued journey-level electrician's license, or a journey level certification in instrumentation or industrial electronics from such widely recognized organizations as the International Society of Electronic Technicians (ISCET), the International Society of Automation (ISA), or the Electronics Technicians Association (ETA) International, or an acceptable equivalent certification
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and a Federal and State criminal background check
• Must be able to wear an air-purifying respirator when required

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Working conditions require heavy physical effort, moving over 60 pounds, where effort is intermittent, less than 15% of the time. Working conditions require high attention to detail or deadlines frequently (between 45% and 70% of the time). A typical workday involves exposure to disagreeable elements, at least one of which is intense, on an occasional basis (between 15% and 45% of time).
