Role OverviewA Plant Utilities Engineer 1 will operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, test, calibrate, and manage mechanical and electrical equipment that provides heat, hot water, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical distribution, fire alarm, and sprinkler systems in campus or residential settings.Primary ResponsibilitiesOperate steam and hot water boilers: lighting off, firing, cleaning, and shutdown.Respond to work orders and directed problem calls.Maintain HVAC systems, including Direct Digital Control adjustments, calibrations, and energy‑efficient modifications.Service residential heating and air‑conditioning equipment such as pumps, piping, air handling units, dampers, and control valves.Conduct testing of boilers, HVAC, and water systems, analyze results, and add chemicals to maintain proper residuals.Operate large central absorption, centrifugal, screw‑driven, and hermetic chiller systems and other refrigeration equipment, performing starting, regulating, and troubleshooting to maintain correct temperatures.Perform operations and maintenance in asbestos environments and supervise asbestos removal projects.Handle hazardous materials, including refrigerants, fuel oil, solvents, biocides, nitrates, and acids.Respond to environmental or safety incidents such as chemical spills and oil spills; implement evacuation plans if required.Operate in confined spaces with personal protective equipment and supervise others doing the same.Travel as needed within the district and occasional travel within New York State for special projects.Receive training related to asbestos‑containing material procedures.Oversee outside contractors working within the campus setting.Supervise Plant Utility Assistants and other personnel within the field of Plant Utilities Engineering.Preferred QualificationsWorking knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment for the assigned trade.Experience with mechanical and routine electrical repairs on heating, ventilating, air‑conditioning, refrigeration, plumbing, pneumatic control systems, and microprocessor‑controlled systems.Knowledge of safety standards and procedures.Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.Experience training and supervising others.Ability to plan and lay out work, develop time and material lists, read and interpret plans, codes, diagrams, architectural blueprints, and specifications.Basic computer skills.Valid New York State driver's license.Minimum QualificationsGraduate of a heating, HVAC, ventilation, air‑conditioning, and refrigeration apprenticeship program from the U.S. Air Force.Enlisted machinery technician (MK) with the U.S. Coast Guard or possession of a Marine Engineer certificate issued by the U.S. Coast Guard.Enlisted power generation equipment repairer with the U.S. Army.Enlisted gas turbine systems technician, submarine nuclear propulsion plant operator, utilities man, machinist mate, or engineman with the U.S. Navy.Merchant Mariner's Document holder and qualified member of the engine department (QMED) as an oiler, fireman/water tender, refrigerating engineer, or engineman with the U.S. Merchant Marine.Completion of a New York State Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program for stationary engineers, plant maintenance (plumber/steamfitter), HVAC mechanic, or plant maintenance (refrigeration/AC).Possession of a High‑Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer License or Stationary Engineer License.Bachelor's degree in Facilities Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Marine Engineering.Four years of full‑time hands‑on experience in commercial or industrial facility maintenance and operation of HVAC systems, boilers, or auxiliary equipment.Four years of full‑time hands‑on experience in a residential setting diagnosing, operating, maintaining, and repairing HVAC systems or boilers.Associate's degree in HVAC and two years of qualifying experience as described in qualifications 9 or 10.Completion of an HVAC certificate or diploma from a BOCES program (900 hours) or an approved certificate in HVAC, electrical, refrigeration, boiler operations and maintenance, or plumbing from an accredited technical school, with two years of qualifying experience.Certification programs must be accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) or recognized by the New York State Education Department Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision (BPSS).Benefits and Employment InformationPaid holidays: 13 per year.Paid vacation leave: 13 days initially.Paid personal leave: 5 days per year.Paid sick leave: 13 days per year (may carry over).Professional leave: up to 3 days per year.Health care coverage available for employees and eligible dependents;
