Job Summary:

Position Emphasis:

The Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine, in conjunction with the University of Colorado Hospital, is recruiting a residency-trained Plastic Surgeon to join the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for a 1.0 FTE position available at the rank of Professor. Candidates must have completed an approved Plastic Surgery residency program and be certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

The position will primarily focus on Amputation, Traumatic Limb Salvage, Microsurgery, Nerve Repair, Neuroplastic Surgery, Oncoplastic Surgery, Orthoplastics, Osseointegration, Peripheral Nerve Injuries, Plastic Surgery, Reconstructive Surgical Procedures, Targeted Muscle Reinnervation.

This position will also include responsibilities as the Medical Director of the Wound Care Clinic as well as the Director of Orthoplastic Surgery.

This position involves the care of patients at the University of Colorado Hospital and its affiliates. The candidate should also demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills.

Plastic Surgery Key Responsibilities:

• Adult orthoplastic surgery, wound care, and may have time and coverage dedicated to general plastic surgery.

Director of Orthoplastic Surgery:

The Director of Orthoplastic Surgery provides strategic, clinical, operational, and administrative leadership for the Orthoplastic Surgery Program. This position oversees the multidisciplinary clinical and surgical operations that integrate Orthopaedic Surgery and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery to provide comprehensive care for patients requiring complex limb salvage, trauma reconstruction, soft tissue coverage, wound management, and extremity reconstruction.

The Director serves as the physician leader of the Orthoplastic Section within Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and is responsible for the supervision, mentorship, and performance management of the Plastic Surgery physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) assigned to the orthoplastic program.

Director of Orthoplastic Surgery Responsibilities:

• Direct the integration of Orthopaedic Surgery and Plastic Surgery teams to ensure seamless collaboration in complex limb salvage, trauma reconstruction, and extremity preservation cases.
• Develop and execute short- and long-term strategic plans for the Orthoplastic Surgery Program, including service line expansion, marketing initiatives, community outreach, and referral development.
• Identify opportunities to enhance patient access, improve care delivery, and expand multidisciplinary orthoplastic services across affiliated clinical sites.
• Represent the Orthoplastic Surgery Program within the Division, Department, affiliated hospitals, and external community partnerships.
• Monitor clinical and surgical outcomes, leading quality improvement initiatives focused on reducing complications, minimizing infection rates, improving functional recovery, and enhancing patient satisfaction.
• Establish and maintain evidence-based clinical pathways while ensuring compliance with hospital accreditation standards, institutional policies, and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Collaborate with clinical and operational leaders to improve efficiency, patient flow, resource utilization, and overall program performance.
• Provide direct supervision, mentorship, and performance management for Plastic Surgery faculty physicians and APPs within the Orthoplastic Section, including establishing expectations related to productivity, quality, professionalism, and patient access.
• Lead recruitment, onboarding, retention, succession planning, and professional development efforts for orthoplastic faculty and APPs.
• Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement among physicians, APPs, nursing staff, therapists, practice managers, and administrative personnel.
• Oversee the procurement and utilization of specialized surgical supplies, implants, wound care technologies, and equipment necessary to support orthoplastic services and effective program operations.
• Advance the academic mission of the Orthoplastic Surgery Program through support of resident, fellow, and medical student education, as well as promotion of research, innovation, and scholarly activity.

The Director of Orthoplastic Surgery reports to the Chief of the Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and works collaboratively with Orthopaedic Surgery leadership, hospital administration, nursing leadership, and departmental leadership to achieve the clinical, operational, educational, and research goals of the Orthoplastic Surgery Program.

Medical Director - Wound Care Clinic

The Medical Director will provide strategic and operational medical leadership and direction for clinical operations working collaboratively with the clinical faculty, staff and leadership of the Hand Clinic at UCH in order to develop and maintain clinical operations which support UCH's mission and values in an organized, effective, innovative, and quality and service-oriented manner. Will be a champion of quality and safety, improving access, and delivery of regional care in the ambulatory environment.

Scope of responsibility will include practice management, operational efficiency, business development, and delivery of outstanding faculty, patient and referring provider service. Has primary responsibility for establishing accountability with providers regarding UCH policies and procedures, operational standards, and quality and service excellence initiatives.

Medical Director Responsibilities:

• The Medical Director will work with the Division Chief to ensure access that is appropriate to the needs of the patient and referring provider. Will have primary responsibility for development of physician scheduling templates. Will direct the efficient management of provider schedules to maximize resources, access and patient satisfaction.
• Is accountable for communication to and education of providers including but not limited to existing and modified UCH clinical policies and procedures, provider responsibilities and other information provided at clinical leadership meetings.
• Will work collaboratively with UCH leadership to develop and operationalize growth strategies and priorities for their specialty.
• Will develop, implement and monitor clinical standards of care and will work with practice director and relevant staff to develop policies and procedures for optimal operations.
• Will partner with the practice director and relevant staff in developing and instituting evidence-based best practice, implementing patient quality and safety initiatives and in evaluating for best patient outcomes and in ensuring regulatory compliance.
• Partners with Nursing and other Clinical leadership in the development of educational tools and in training of staff to optimize patient care and outcomes.
• Will participate in and champion continuous quality improvement initiatives.
• Will partner with the practice director and relevant staff to review patient satisfaction scores for the applicable sites, and develop and implement strategies for improvement
• Will partner with Health Information Management to ensure timely completion of medical records by providers and ensuring prompt communication with primary care, referring and other treating physicians/providers.
• Will partner with the Clinical Application Systems Department regarding optimization of EPIC.
• The Medical Director will respond promptly to complaints and to requests for information from UCH teams, patients and referring providers.
• Serves as the point person for 2 way communication between CHCO management and the providers regarding clinical operations. Will be responsible for communicating initiatives, standards and operational decisions to the providers within their specialty. Works to identify issues within clinical operations to enhance provider and faculty retention and works towards resolution of issues that may impede ambulatory operations.
• The Medical Director will embrace the UCH Standards of Behavior and other Policies and hold clinic providers accountable for both those and the additional behaviors/expectations stated below
• Attend UCH clinical leadership meetings and other strategic and operational meetings, as requested.
• Direct supervisor for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) in the Hand Clinic. Currently 3 APPs. This includes completing annual reviews via PRiSM, clinical work supervision and addressing disciplinary actions if necessary.
• Provides input into the performance of the direct patient care staff and administrative staff.
• Provides secondary input into the performance of their partner business manager.
• Will educate and hold clinic providers accountable for adherence to UCH practice, operational and behavioral standards.

The Medical Director reports to the Chief of the Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and works collaboratively with UCH practice and nursing leadership, other UCH staff, and applicable CUSOM faculty and providers.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Professor:

• Medical Degree from an accredited school of medicine
• Board Certification in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
• Completion of Plastic Surgery Fellowship (ACGME accredited)
• Ability to obtain license to practice as a physician in the state of Colorado with prescriptive privileges
• Ability to obtain license to practice as a physician in the state of Colorado with prescriptive privileges
• 7+ years' experience in plastic surgery practice for Professor rank
• 7+ years' experience in wound care
• 7+ years' experience in orthopedic surgical techniques

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience or training in orthopedic surgery.
• Experience in an academic clinical environment.
• The candidate should also demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills.
• Experience in clinical leadership.
• Experience in administrative leadership.
• Experience in amputation and limb restoration surgery.
• Experience in neuroplastic surgery.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

Professor: $425,000 - $500,000

Medical Director of the Wound Care Clinic Stipend: $100,421

Director of Orthoplastics Stipend: $100,500
