Job Title: Platform Engineer – Federal Technology
Location: Tysons Corner, VA (Hybrid / Remote)
Duration: Fulltime
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced
Platform Engineer to support modern technology and digital transformation initiatives within a
U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) environment.
The Platform Engineer will design, build, and operate internal platforms and reusable engineering capabilities that enable development teams to build, test, deploy, and operate applications consistently, securely, and efficiently.
This role will focus on
platform engineering, developer enablement, cloud-native infrastructure, Kubernetes, automation, Infrastructure-as-Code, self-service capabilities, and standardization of engineering tools and practices.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer who has built and operated platforms used by other engineering teams—not simply maintained infrastructure or individual CI/CD pipelines.
Key Responsibilities- Design, build, and operate internal developer platforms that enable engineering teams to efficiently build, test, deploy, and operate applications.
- Develop reusable "golden paths " and standardized engineering capabilities that promote consistent application delivery.
- Establish and standardize tools, platforms, processes, and development practices across engineering teams.
- Build and maintain cloud-native platform services and infrastructure.
- Implement Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) to automate provisioning, configuration, and management of platform environments.
- Design, deploy, and operate containerized environments using Kubernetes and Docker.
- Develop self-service capabilities that reduce reliance on manual, ticket-driven operational processes.
- Increase automation across development and operations while improving platform reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
- Partner with DevOps, Cloud, Security, Software Engineering, Data, and Architecture teams to provide shared engineering capabilities.
- Integrate platform services with existing enterprise systems, applications, tools, and technology environments.
- Establish monitoring, logging, observability, and operational practices for platform services.
- Identify opportunities to reduce technical debt and improve the maintainability of platform infrastructure.
- Support secure CI/CD capabilities and integration of security and quality controls into engineering workflows.
- Troubleshoot complex platform, infrastructure, containerization, and deployment issues.
- Evaluate emerging platform technologies and recommend solutions based on scalability, security, usability, cost, and operational requirements.
- Develop technical documentation, standards, procedures, training materials, and knowledge-transfer artifacts.
- Work within Agile and cross-functional product teams to continuously improve platform capabilities and developer experience.
Required Qualifications- 5+ years of experience in Platform Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering, DevOps, Cloud Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience building and operating an internal developer platform or reusable platform capabilities used by other engineering teams.
- Production experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration.
- Production experience with Infrastructure-as-Code technologies such as Terraform, Ansible, or equivalent.
- Experience building automated, self-service infrastructure and developer capabilities.
- Strong understanding of cloud-native architecture and modern software delivery practices.
- Experience with CI/CD, automation, version control, and DevOps/DevSecOps practices.
- Experience troubleshooting and operating production platform environments.
- Strong understanding of reliability, scalability, security, and maintainability principles.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience supporting U.S. Federal Government or DOJ technology initiatives.
- Experience standardizing engineering tools and practices across multiple development teams.
- Experience designing self-service developer platforms rather than primarily ticket-driven infrastructure operations.
- Experience developing internal developer portals, platform APIs, reusable templates, or automated provisioning workflows.
- Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, Ansible, and cloud infrastructure.
- Experience with AWS, Microsoft Azure, or other enterprise cloud platforms.
- Experience implementing platform security, automated security controls, and DevSecOps practices.
- Experience integrating platform capabilities with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing.
- Experience improving developer productivity, deployment consistency, reliability, or delivery performance.
- Experience supporting application modernization and cloud-native transformation.
- Experience working within Agile, product-oriented, cross-functional engineering teams.
- Experience improving engineering delivery maturity across teams.
- Relevant cloud, Kubernetes, DevOps, or platform engineering certifications.
- Experience developing training materials and knowledge-transfer artifacts.
