Position Summary

The Plumber/Pipefitter performs professional plumbing and pipefitting work across institutionally owned facilities. This position maintains and repairs plumbing systems, pumps, gas piping, steam and hot water piping, drains, and related equipment, while also installing new water supply and drain piping for building modifications and other campus projects. The position works under the direction of the Mechanical Operations Manager and supervises one to two student employees.

What You’ll Do

• Maintain and repair water mains, valves, storm sewers, floor and roof drains, garbage disposals, water fountains, hydrants, water softeners, and related plumbing systems.
• Install and maintain airline, gas, chemical, steam, heating, and cooling piping, including piping used in Chemistry Lab facilities.
• Lay out, order materials for, construct, and install new water supply and drain piping for building modifications, remodels, and customer projects.
• Replace and repair existing plumbing and miscellaneous plumbing facilities as part of campus construction and renovation work.
• Maintain and repair galvanized and copper water supply lines; plastic, lead-joint, and main sewer lines; toilets, flush valves, faucets, sinks, showers, drinking fountains, and other plumbing fixtures.
• Maintain and repair high- and low-pressure steam and heating-water distribution systems, including repacking and reseating valves, repairing leaks, and replacing gaskets.
• Maintain and repair various pumps, including steam and condensate pumps, throughout campus.
• Perform CNA projects, pipe fitting, plumbing repairs, and other related duties as assigned.
• Supervise one to two student employees in assigned work.
• Independently order miscellaneous repair parts, prepare estimates for some minor remodeling projects, and carry out regular day-to-day responsibilities.
• Work with in-house or contracted journeyman plumbers as needed and defer major or highly sensitive job priorities, personnel matters, vacation time, and major reassignment decisions to the Mechanical Operations Manager.

Qualifications, Skills & Attributes

Journeyman Level

• Valid State of Idaho Journeyman Plumber License.
• Four years of experience in the plumbing trade.

Apprentice Level
Candidates without a Journeyman license may be considered if they meet at least one of the following:

• One year of completed apprenticeship schooling.
• One year of professional plumbing work experience.
• One year of experience as a student plumber or apprentice.
• A valid Apprentice Plumber license is accepted. This position works and trains with a journeyman and includes responsibilities for routine and planned work orders as well as new construction.

Technical Skills

• Proficiency in soldering and repairing various types of piping connections.
• Knowledge of and comfort working with systems involving steam, natural gas, chemicals, and sewage.

Certifications

• State of Idaho Journeyman Plumber License required; Apprentice Plumber license accepted.
• Backflow Assembly Tester certification preferred.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

• Ability to safely work in confined spaces and around hazardous materials, including noxious sewage, chemicals, and steam.
• Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to perform physical labor involving significant bending, squatting, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.
• Ability to operate heavy hand tools, such as large pipe wrenches, requiring manual strength and exertion.
• Ability to work from ladders, scaffolding, or elevated positions to access overhead piping and equipment.
• Ability to work across campus facilities, including cramped, confined, or difficult-to-reach spaces.
• Frequent exposure to restrooms, mechanical rooms, boiler plants, storm sewers, drainage systems, and wastewater or sewage areas.
• Exposure to high heat and extreme temperatures, including outdoor conditions and confined steam vaults or tunnel systems.
• Potential exposure to biohazards, wastewater, noxious substances, hazardous materials, laboratory chemicals, and process piping in academic and research facilities.

Conditions of employment require employees to hold and to be worthy to hold temple recommends. Job applicants must be able to meet these conditions to advance through a hiring process successfully. An expired recommend will prevent consideration for hire.

Work Schedule

Regular Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Weekend/Holiday/On-Call: Weekend on-call responsibilities, overtime when needed, and emergency call-ins.
