This recruitment will establish an open eligible list that will be used to fill current and future Plumber positions. The eligible list established may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications throughout the County of Orange.

OC FACILITIES MAINTENANCE/OC PUBLIC WORKS

OC Facilities Maintenance ensures efficient and innovative operations of County facilities through maintenance management services. OC Facilities Maintenance employs over 100 full-time employees with an annual operating budget of $5 million. The Service Area is led by a Deputy Director who oversees facilities managers and skilled craft and maintenance personnel, including supervisors, leads, and administrative support positions.

OC Public Works provides services on a regional basis to unincorporated areas, to cities, and to other County agencies and departments. The primary mission of the department is to protect and enrich the community through efficient delivery and maintenance of public works infrastructure, planning, and development services. OC Public Works core values are integrity, accountability, service and trust.

OCPW is a unique County department comprised of ten (10) service areas: Administrative Services, Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights & Measures; OC Construction; OC Development Services; OC Environmental Resources; OC Facilities Design & Construction and CUF; OC Facilities Maintenance & OC Fleet Services; OC Infrastructure Programs; OC Operations & Maintenance.

THE OPPORTUNITY

OC Facilities Maintenance is looking for an experienced Plumber to perform journey-level work installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing systems throughout our facilities. Plumbers are tasked with supporting a 24/7 operation to maintain service at county facilities, including but not limited to, the County Data Center, Registrar of Voters, OC Parks, and Juvenile Detention Facilities.

Responsibilities and duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Installs water, gas, steam and sewer lines, fixtures, valves, gas and water heaters, and other devices
  • Diagnoses plumbing issues and performs repairs on plumbing and steam systems
  • Performs repairs and inspections on backflow preventers
  • Cuts and threads pipe
  • Plans and lays out alterations and new plumbing systems

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES

The ideal candidate will possess three (3) or more years of journey-level plumbing experience working in commercial and/or industrial buildings.

In addition, the ideal candidate will also have extensive experience in the following core competencies:

Technical Knowledge

  • Principles, practices and methods of the plumbing and steam fitting trades in an industrial and/or commercial environment
  • Tools and equipment used in the plumbing and steam fitting trades
  • Procedures and equipment used to inspect and test safety devices used on plumbing and steam systems
  • Performing journeyman-level plumbing system, fixture installation as well as maintenance and repair work
  • Building and safety codes
  • Steam traps, condensate, receivers and piping
  • Sewer and water pumps

Analytical Skills

  • Read and work from blueprints, schematics, sketches and piping diagrams
  • Perform preventative maintenance on various equipment
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Effectively communicate and convey ideas to others both orally and in writing
  • Analyze the work of others

Safety Focus

  • Able to follow applicable building and safety codes
  • Safe work practices relating to the use of plumbing tools
  • Follow safe work policies and procedures
  • Safety precautions required to protect personnel and property from damage

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

Possession of, or ability to obtain prior to appointment, a valid California Driver License, Class C or higher.

A Certified Backflow Prevention Tester License is preferred, but is not required.

A panel of job knowledge experts evaluates performance using standardized criteria. Eligible List

Once the assessment has been completed, HRS will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
