Position Overview

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Plumbing Supervisor, the Plumbing Inspector I/II is responsible for performing onsite inspections of plumbing installations, ensures satisfactory workmanship, use of proper materials, and compliance with plumbing codes.

Summary of Job Duties

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Conducting onsite inspections of plumbing installations at residential and industrial new construction or renovated locations to ensure compliance with the Ohio Plumbing Code.
  • Observing various field tests as assigned; preparing rough drawings identifying location of previous sewer or water supply systems as assigned.
  • Providing assistance and/or consultation services, including layout, design work, and written correspondence to homeowners, contractors, and others.
  • Preparing daily schedule.
  • Preparing sewer/water and backflow documentation.
  • Receiving and responding to phone calls regarding plumbing-related questions and complaints.
  • Demonstrating both individual and departmental accountability by completing and maintaining accurate, legible, appropriate, and thorough records pertaining to plumbing installations

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

  • Plumbing Inspector I: One (1) year of specialized or technical training in a certified plumbing program and Seven (7) years of practical experience in the installation of plumbing systems
  • Plumbing Inspector II: Requirements of Plumbing Inspector I and ability to perform plan reviews, review blueprints or isometric drawings submitted by contractors, architects, or engineers, and provide assistance and/or consultative services, including layout, design work, and written correspondence to homeowners and contractors.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the State of Ohio Unlimited Plumbing Inspector Certification within one year of employment.
  • Knowledge of the Ohio Plumbing Code
  • Understands and acknowledges that Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County uses evidence-based and evidence-informed public health practices based on scientific research including health promotion theory and practice, environmental health measures, and communicable disease control measures including vaccination, isolation, and quarantine practices, and medicine for treatment and prevention of disease, among others.
  • Understands and acknowledges the use of tobacco or nicotine products in any form including replacement therapy products and prescription medications used to treat smoking addiction for anyone hired after January 1, 2014, is prohibited
  • Required to play an active role during a public health emergency, crisis, outbreak, incident, or event in which the Health Commissioner deems additional personnel resources are warranted. This may include changes in responsibilities and working locations/hours
  • Completion of Incident Command System 100 and National Incident Management System 700 courses within 90 days of hire
  • Valid State of Ohio driver's license and insurance on any personal vehicle that will be used for work

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Architecture with 3 years experience in plumbing system design, estimating or supervision of plumbing systems installations

Seasonal Employees: Benefits include Sick Leave accrued at 4.6 hours for every eighty 80 hours in active

pay status. Seasonal employees scheduled to work 40 hours during their period of employment will accrue vacation in the same manner as regular full-time employees and can use their vacation after completion of twenty-six (26) bi-weekly pay periods in active pay status. Part-time Seasonal employees (scheduled to work less than 40 hours) do not accrue vacation.

Intermittent and Temporary Employees: Long-Term Sick Leave accrual is based on hours worked.
