    Role Overview: Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner - Part-Time - Newport News, VA

    We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to join our Newport News team on a part-time basis. This role offers the opportunity to provide high-quality, person-centered psychiatric care within post-acute, long-term care and assisted living settings. The successful clinician will work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams, support patients and families, and promote mental health, emotional wellbeing and continuity of care.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide psychiatric evaluations, assessments and follow-up care for patients in post-acute, long-term care and assisted living settings

    • Assess, diagnose and manage common mental health and psychiatric conditions, including depression, anxiety, psychosis, behavioral concerns and cognitive impairment

    • Develop, implement and revise individualized treatment plans in collaboration with patients, families, facility staff and interdisciplinary teams

    • Prescribe and manage psychiatric medications safely and effectively, including monitoring response, side effects and potential interactions

    • Complete mental status examinations and identify changes in mood, behavior, cognition or safety risk

    • Assess and respond appropriately to psychiatric emergencies, including suicidal ideation, acute agitation and changes in mental status

    • Provide education and support to patients, families and facility staff regarding mental health conditions, treatment plans and medication management

    • Participate in care planning meetings, interdisciplinary reviews and family consultations as required

    • Coordinate care with primary care clinicians, specialists, hospitals, behavioral health providers and community resources

    • Maintain accurate, timely and clinically appropriate documentation in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR)

    • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and promote trauma-informed, culturally sensitive and person-centered care

    Qualifications and Required Skills

    • Master’s or doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited institution, with a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner specialization

    • Current, unrestricted Virginia Nurse Practitioner license and eligibility to practice as a PMHNP in Virginia

    • Current national PMHNP board certification through an approved certifying organization

    • Active DEA registration and prescriptive authority, as required

    • Experience in psychiatric, behavioral health, post-acute, long-term care, geriatric or related settings preferred

    • Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic reasoning and medication management skills

    • Proficiency with Electronic Medical Record systems and timely, accurate documentation practices

    • Excellent communication, collaboration and problem-solving abilities

    • Compassionate, culturally sensitive and person-centered approach to patient care

    • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with facility staff and multidisciplinary care teams
