SUMMARY

Provide prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, education, and consultation for patients of all ages with foot and ankle disorders, diseases, and injuries. Provide medical and surgical care for a wide range of foot and ankle conditions, including complex disorders, trauma, injuries, and congenital abnormalities. Detect early signs of systemic diseases and other foot conditions that may impact overall health. Perform pre-operative histories and physical exams and may admit patients in accordance with MTF policy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work under the general supervision of the Chief, Podiatry, who discusses policies and objectives. Exercise independent judgment in selecting and performing a full range of diagnostic evaluations for patients.
  • Participate in established peer (other medical specialist) review process monthly. Provide chart review for quality assurance purposes in the area of neurology if requested on an occasional basis.
  • Attend and participate in patient care reports, patient care conferences, team conferences, professional staff conferences, and other appropriate professional activities only to the extent that such attendance and participation is related to assigned cases and/or performance of services as determined by the supervisor.
  • Examine, diagnose, and treat diseases and injuries of the foot and ankle by surgical and conservative means.
  • Provide comprehensive medical and surgical management of disorders of the foot and ankle. This includes examination, diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment, prevention, and care of conditions/functions of the foot, ankle, and related structures.
  • Prepare and review case histories and obtain data through interviews.
  • Examine patients and determine which x-ray examinations and clinical laboratory tests are required.
  • Interpret test results and evaluate examination findings.
  • Determine procedures for preoperative and postoperative care and prescribe orthotics.
  • Perform surgical procedures and coordinate care with civilian anesthesia providers and hospitals.
  • Reduce and immobilize fractures by open or closed methods, using such corrective devices as braces, casts, splints, and surgical implants.
  • Administer and prescribe antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, pain, and other medications.
  • Direct nurses in procedures for preoperative and postoperative care and operating room techniques.
  • Advise on kind and quantity of podiatric supplies and equipment.
  • Coordinate podiatric services with other medical activities.
  • Serve as consultant to MTF staff on podiatric conditions.
  • Complete appropriate military specific documentation such as (but not limited to) narrative medical summaries, convalescent leave and duty limiting conditions (medical profile) paperwork.
  • Maintain knowledge of computer operations in the use of basic word processing, data entry and automated medical records.
  • Under the direction of the MTF, perform duties at UCHealth and Centura Health hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise and mentor other project staff members.
