GENERAL DESCRIPTION Conduct traffic safety educational programs at Safety City to approximately 31 county area and off-site programs as required. This position performs general maintenance of Safety City equipment to ensure the continuity of educational programs. This position is a temporary position that will last in duration of the 2026-2027 school year and mandate approximately 90-100 hours monthly. SUPERVISION EXERCISED This position exercises no supervision of other City of Abilene employees; however, may oversee volunteers and school district personnel during their Safety City visit to ensure that the traffic education program is conducted safely. IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES Assist with the implementation of traffic safety education programs including pedestrian, cycling and motor vehicles to a target audience of third graders or younger, who may have short attention spans in a manner that captivates and facilitates learning. Assist in creating and presenting Safety Education presentations to various community groups. Maintain contact and provide public relations activities for elementary and secondary schools. Perform preventative maintenance on electric vehicles, bicycles and other equipment used at Safety City to assist with the educational programs. Maintain Safety City facilities and grounds. Responsible for taking out and storing miniature vehicles and bicycles daily. Assist with inventorying for maintenance and equipment needs. Assist with developing and producing printed material including brochures, flyers, and pamphlets. Cross train with other Safety City personnel to ensure a seamless program. Assist Youth Division with clerical duties. OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: Office practices, methods and computer equipment. Principles and methods of training and instruction. Principles and practices in dealing with the public and public relations activities. Traffic laws for motor vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. Minor tools and equipment and their use. Skill to: Operate traffic signals and signs. Operate audio and visual equipment. Operate motor vehicles safely. Good time management skills with minimal direct supervision. Use computer software such as Microsoft-Office including Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Organize effectively and multitask. Repair vehicles, equipment and facilities, which require mechanical and minor carpentry work. Ability to: Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Effectively communicate with internal and external partners in safety education including supervisors, co-workers, teachers, parents and volunteers. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally. One (1) year of experience in crime prevention, public service, and/or safety education is preferred. Education/Training: A high school or GED is required.
