Are you looking to gain valuable law enforcement experience while making a difference in your community? The City of Chino is seeking motivated and dedicated individuals to join our team as part-time Police Cadet!

This position is scheduled to work up to 36 hours per week, Monday - Thursday 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Work schedules are subject to change based on the operational needs of the Department and the service needs of the community.

In this role, you'll work alongside law enforcement professionals, providing essential support to various divisions of the Chino Police Department. From office support to para-technical police work, you'll gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment-all while preparing for a future career in law enforcement.

Successful candidates must be able to pass an extensive Police Department Background Investigation and Administrative Review. Please refer to the Special Requirements section below for additional details.

Duties/Responsibilities

What You'll Do

Police Cadets are assigned to various divisions of the Police Department as designated by the Chief of Police and perform a variety of tasks within the guidelines of non-hazardous duty assignments in support of sworn personnel.

Essential Functions:

  • Support Police Department programs and public awareness efforts.
  • Assist sworn personnel with non-hazardous tasks like parking citations, traffic control, and vehicle towing.
  • Prepare, collect, and set up equipment as needed.
  • Perform office tasks such as filing, answering calls, and maintaining records.
  • Help coordinate maintenance and repairs for department vehicles.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in a professional, service-oriented manner.
  • Maintain regular attendance and uphold the City's Mission and Values.

Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • Education: High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Experience: Participation in a Law Enforcement Explorer Program and/or enrollment in college courses leading to a degree in criminal justice or a related field and maintaining a C average (desirable).
  • Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a valid California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record.

Knowledge of:

  • Office methods and procedures.

Ability to:

  • Learn and follow Police Department rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Work safely and efficiently.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Deal tactfully and courteously with the public, City staff, and co-workers.
  • Understand and follow verbal and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Special Requirements

  • Must be 18 years old to apply.
  • Work a varying flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays (hours/days may be adjusted as needed).
  • Receive satisfactory results from a background investigation, a physical examination, which includes a drug screen, and an administrative review.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to frequently lift over 50 lbs. with frequent lifting, pushing, and/or carrying of objects weighing over 25 lbs.
  • Ability to move quickly and easily, often including the ability to crawl, stoop, or bend.
  • Without correction, vision not less than 20/40 in each eye, which must be corrected to 20/20 in one eye and not less than 20/25 in the other eye.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
