Position Description

The Fresno Police Department is currently recruiting individuals who have the drive and commitment to be part of a vigorous law enforcement agency to attend the upcoming Fresno City College Police Academy. The selected candidate(s) will be expected to encompass a high level of commitment to public service. The Police Cadet II is a non-sworn trainee level class in the Police Department in which incumbents perform non-enforcement duties such as prisoner transportation, investigation of non-injury traffic collisions, traffic and parking control, booking of prisoners, providing standby guard duty for injured prisoners, and completing related paperwork. Work may include various non-sworn administrative and patrol duties in support of police activities and are responsible to provide support to sworn police staff in a variety of areas; and may be assigned to attend an academy. Incumbents may be assigned to any shift including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Police Cadet II is designed to prepare the incumbent for a career in law enforcement. Failure to demonstrate the ability to become a Police Officer may result in termination from the program as outlined in F.M.C. Section 3-266.

The Requirements

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination.

Possess a high school diploma or equivalent; must be at least 20 years of age at time of application; and possess a valid California Drivers License at time of application. Candidates considered for hire must provide proof of a valid drivers license and current copy of their driving record.

Pursuant to P.O.S.T. requirements, must be a citizen of the United States or permanent resident alien who is eligible, and has applied, for citizenship.

Must successfully complete a polygraph test or computer voice stress analyzer test and an extensive background investigation prior to appointment.

Additional Requirements

May be required to attend and successfully complete a California Law Enforcement Basic Academy approved by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.

Selection Process

The examination process may consist of the following parts:

PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST- Pass/Fail: The physical ability/agility test (PAT) will evaluate individuals on their physical preparedness to perform a series of job-related events that require strength, coordination, balance, proper techniques, and endurance. May consist of a 99-yard obstacle course, 500-yard sprint, 6 foot solid fence climb, 6 foot chain fence climb, and a 165 pound body drag. Must dress in proper physical training clothing, such as, athletic shorts, tee shirt, and running shoes. Do not eat heavily on the morning of the test and bring bottled water on the day of the test.

Because this test is arduous, it is important, critical, and essential that you be in excellent physical condition. Candidates must pass all phases of the PAT to be considered further in this process.

The Physical Agility Test is tentatively scheduled for August 8, 2026.

Candidates must achieve a passing score on the PAT in order to be referred to the Department for further consideration.

Applicants referred to the Police Department for consideration must successfully complete a polygraph test or computer voice stress analyzer test, extensive background investigation, and police department interview before receiving a conditional offer of employment.

Please note: any person who fails any part of the process, including but not limited to, department interview, polygraph test, psychological examination, medical examination, or background investigation, may not reapply for Police Cadet II for a minimum of 180 days from date of notification of failed component.
