Job Summary
The Police Corporal performs a variety of duties to ensure that the university campus is a safe environment for faculty, staff, students, and visitors, by preserving the peace, preventing and detecting crime, enforcing the law, and protecting the rights of all citizens.
Duties
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all relevant personnel and departments, especially other members of the police department.
- Patrols assigned areas to protect persons and property; performs building checks, doing extensive foot patrols, indoors and out.
- Prevents and detects crimes.
- Makes arrests, collects evidence, and prepares reports.
- Enforces local, state, and federal laws; enforces university policies.
- Conducts preliminary and follow-up police investigations; conducts all criminal investigations.
- Provides for the safe and convenient flow of traffic and pedestrians within the university area; checks and reports on deficient signs, road surfaces, lighting, or other facility deficiencies on the university campus.
- Conducts non-police community services; provides information and assistance to the public.
- Testifies in court, as required.
- Conducts background checks for new police department hires; conducts field training for all newly hired sworn personnel.

Qualifications
Required Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must successfully complete all phases of the departmental selection process, including the Field Training Officer Program
Required Experience:
- Minimum of four (4) years of experience as a police officer
- Must meet the standards of a Police Officer II
- Must obtain at a minimum a "Meets Expectations" rating on all Investigator competencies at the annual performance appraisal for the preceding two (2) years
- Must obtain at a minimum a "Meets Expectations" rating on all Team Lead competencies at the annual performance appraisal for the preceding four (4) years
License/Certification:
- Must maintain a valid, current driver''s license
- Intermediate Peace Officer''s Proficiency Certificate issued by TCOLE is required

- Knowledge of the methods and techniques of report preparation

- Knowledge of university policies; knowledge of human behavior and motivation; knowledge of the street layout and geographic area around the university

Work Location and Physical Demands
Primary Work Location:
- This is a uniform position in an indoor and outdoor environment.
- All positions requiring peace officer certification should be prepared for full field duty at any time regardless of primary assignment.
- Personnel may be reassigned to field duty at any time either permanently or temporarily to assure appropriate field staffing levels.
- Incumbent may be allowed routine office wear as required for performance of duty.
Physical Demands:
- Requires maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, or walking for prolonged periods of time, as well as for bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, jumping and climbing; adequate speech, hearing, visual acuity, and ability to distinguish color is required
- May be required to carry, push, pull, drag, or hold medium to heavy weight objects of up to 50lbs. The use of fingers, both hands, both arms, and both legs is required; may be required to take offensive and/or defensive action during physical confrontations. May be exposed to animal and human body fluids, hazards of emergency driving, hazards associated with traffic control and working in and near traffic, working in and near natural and man-made disasters, inclement weather conditions and extreme temperatures.
- May be required to work in and around heavy vehicles and equipment. May be exposed to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, and gases when assisting in emergency calls. Possible exposure to hazardous chemicals, high voltage and toxic materials, waste, and infectious diseases. May involve exposure to an emergency public safety environment, emergency and disaster situations, potentially hostile environments, and dangerous and/or hostile people.
- Requires the ability to safely discharge a firearm. Requires the ability to safely operate motorized equipment and assigned vehicles. Requires frequent contact with the public. Works irregular hours that include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Works overtime with short or no notice.
