    Description

    Manages public safety operations and activities of both sworn law enforcement and civilian personnel for an assigned unit, area, or location while fostering a culture of cooperative engagement with the community to promote the protection of life and property and the prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes, through the equitable enforcement of applicable local, state, and federal laws, as well as District policies.

    Some assignments within this classification may be assigned at the District. The Police Chief reserves the discretion to reassign Sergeants to different work locations/shifts as operational needs require. Assigned job duties, tasks, work functions may be assigned by the Police Chief.

    Special Requirements

    Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:

    • Possession and maintenance of a valid Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) certification as a Peace Officer in the State of Arizona, including the satisfaction of all qualifications (age, citizenship, background, psychological, ethical, medical, or otherwise) required for such certification, at the date of and subsequent to the date of hire. A valid certification indicates that the individual is authorized to engage in enforcement duties, carry a firearm, wear or display a badge, make arrests, perform patrol functions, and operate a marked police vehicle. Restricted certifications are not considered valid for the purpose of initial hire.
    • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Arizona Drivers License (Class D) with an initial and ongoing driving record to the satisfaction of MCCCD.
    • Current CPR/First Aid certification is required for the duration of employment within this classification.

    Background Check: Because of the confidential and sensitive nature of the information handled, successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation, which may include, but is not limited to, polygraph testing, fingerprinting, and a psychological examination to the initial and ongoing satisfaction of MCCCD, is required.

    Firearms: Positions within this classification have frequent exposure to firearms and are regularly required to carry a firearm. Incumbents must successfully complete initial and ongoing firearms qualification in compliance with AZPOST requirements. Such qualification will occur on an annual basis or another schedule, in compliance with any applicable laws, rules, or regulations as determined by MCCCD. Incumbents must maintain the legal ability to carry and utilize firearms in the course of their duties at all times during employment within this classification.

    Substance Abuse Testing: Due to the nature of police work, positions within this classification shall be subject to pre-employment, ongoing/random, and/or incident-based alcohol, drug, and/or controlled substance testing in compliance with any applicable laws, rules, and regulations.

    Essential Functions

    Leadership responsibilities / duties. 30%

    • Supervises the day-to-day activities of others
    • Plans, organizes, assigns, supervises, reviews and evaluates the work of staff-
    • Composes, reviews, finalizes, and approves reports and other work products of the unit
    • Plans organizes, and manages police employees and public safety services, administration, and operations of assigned locations and properties
    • Responds to emergencies, calls, and incidents

    Community Policing 20%

    • Provides public awareness and community education presentations
    • Leads by example - patrolling and engaging with students, staff, employees, and community members

    Police Administration 30%

    • Participates in hiring, discipline, and termination activities
    • Identified training needs and opportunities; provides staff training and mentoring
    • Provides training, in person and/or by creating online courses for staff as needed
    • Ensures compliance with laws, ordinances, policies, and regulations
    • Assists in developing long-range goals, objectives, and strategic plans
    • Researches and implements industry standards, trends, best practices, and emerging technologies for the work unit/s
    • Assists in developing the budget, manages expense allocation, identifies resource needs, and makes recommendations

    Performs other duties as assigned - 20%
