About this Job

This is a part-time position located at the State Museum in New Orleans, LA.

This position helps ensure the safety and security of visitors, staff, collections, and museum facilities. This position is responsible for patrolling buildings, grounds, and parking areas to protect against damage and trespassing and to maintain order. This position also reports irregularities such as leaking pipes, fire hazards, unsecured windows and doors, and assists with safety checks of equipment. Additionally, the officer monitors museum exhibitions and galleries for potential threats and provides security for rental events.

  • The incumbent of this position is required to be a La POST commissioned police officer with the power to arrest and must maintain current training requirements pursuant to R.S> 36:2049(8)(8) & R.S. 40:2405.*

Minimum Qualifications

No experience or training is required.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Possession of a current Louisiana drivers license.

Willingness and ability to attain a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.

An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Serves as an armed commissioned Police Officer in the enforcement of State, Federal, and local laws.
  • Patrols interior and perimeter of LSM properties to ensure security and deter theft.
  • Patrols at night during special events to prevent vandalism, control visitor traffic, fires, and unauthorized entry, and provide guest protection.
  • Conducts monthly building inspections to monitor for safety hazards relative to the Office of Risk Management's (ORM) Safety program.
  • Serves as a POST-certified police officer.
  • Maintains a building of daily activities, including entry/exit of LSM employee guests into restricted areas, deliveries, etc.
  • Controls and accounts for the transfer of artifacts between LSM properties.
  • Ensure entry control by unlocking/locking buildings upon opening and closing each day and monitor and operate building alarms and security systems.
  • In crisis situations, judiciously uses force, if necessary, to detain individuals, make arrests, restore order, or prevent the stealing of property.
  • When required, rendering first aid and maintain crowd control during special events.
  • Maintains positive working relationship with the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, the New Orleans Police Department, and other law enforcement agencies. Coordinates and cooperates with these agencies to support security operations, investigations, and public safety initiatives as necessary.
  • Maintain knowledge of LSM programs/exhibits in each assigned OSM Museum facilities and provides information to museum visitors as required.

Position-Specific Details:

  • Appointment Type: This position will be filled as a part-time Classified WAE, limited to 1,245 working hours in a 12-month period. Starting Hourly Pay varies, depending on experience.
  • Work Schedule: This is a part-time position that reports in-office. This position may be required to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. This position is required to travel between Museum locations.
