Job Summary This position's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, enforcing the law, providing service, information and aid to all citizens as circumstances require, assisting and supporting victims of crime, preventing crime, suppressing disturbances, investigating criminal offenses, and arresting offenders.

This position serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).

Police officers are responsible for law enforcement duties for the protection, safety and welfare of students, faculty, staff, visitors, and all property under the control and jurisdiction of The University of Texas System, including primary law enforcement jurisdiction in all counties where Lamar Institute of Technology has real property interest and general law enforcement jurisdiction in all other Texas counties.

This position exercises independent judgment and discretion within the limits prescribed by law, Rules and Regulations of the Board of Regents, LIT institutional rules and regulations, and the Lamar University Police Departmental policies and procedures.

Duties/Responsibilities To perform law enforcement duties on the property under the control and jurisdiction of Lamar Institute of Technology or as otherwise authorized or required by law.

Preserve the peace by the use of all lawful means, interceding, when authorized by law, to prevent or suppress crime.

Execute all lawful process.

Arrest offenders with and without warrant when authorized by law.

Investigate criminal offenses to detect and arrest criminals, and recover stolen or lost property.

Attempt to locate missing persons.

Enforce traffic law by detecting violations, making violator contacts, placing violators in custody or issuing citations or warnings.

Investigate motor vehicle collisions.

Prepare various written reports narrating law enforcement and police activities.

Give credible and accurate testimony in the criminal courts of this state and the United States.

Confers with prosecuting attorneys, preserves evidence, and maintains confidential information.

Confers with local law enforcement, criminal justice and emergency response agencies on matters of mutual interest.

Provides assistance and support to the victims of crime.

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or GED • Successfully passed the TCOLE peace officer licensing examination • Possess a Peace Officer license from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• 15 college hours from an accredited college or university • One year experience as a full-time commissioned Texas Peace Officer

SUPERVISION

Received: Direct supervision of work by Lamar University Corporals, Sergeants and other supervisors -as assigned.

EQUIPMENT Required:

• Proficient with all equipment utilized in the performance of assigned duties, to include but not be limited to: • Firearms • Restraints • Less lethal force weapons and techniques • Vehicles • Communications equipment • Computers • Investigative and surveillance equipment

ACCURACY

Proficiency in all phases of duties performed. Must demonstrate logical and effective problem solving ability. Must be able to provide creditable testimony in a court of law.

PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES

Duties involve driving, walking, running, standing, stooping, climbing, crouching, pushing, jumping over, pulling, carrying, reaching above head, lifting, lowering, hand-wrist and elbow motion, grasping, and holding.

Good physical condition and vision, ability to hear and speak and full use of arms and legs.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Usual: Exposure to outside weather conditions. May be required to work either day or night on any one of three shifts with varying days off and on holidays. Work involves a degree of hazard.

Must be eligible to hold a Peace Officer Commission issued by Lamar University Police Department and a valid drivers license not subject to suspension.

Must be eligible to drive a University/LIT owned or leased motor vehicle.

Must meet certain prerequisites established by the Lamar University Police Department and the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement concerning age requirements and physical, mental, and educational standards.

Must have the physical and mental capabilities to properly carry out responsibilities and duties as a commissioned police officer of Lamar Institute of Technology.

Effective written and oral communications skills.

Knowledge and skills in emergency medical procedures, first aid and CPR techniques.

OTHER

Must successfully complete a minimum one-year probationary period, immediately following commissioning as a Police Officer.

Must be qualified to be armed at all times when on duty and must be qualified and prepared to execute the obligations, duties and responsibilities of a Texas Peace Officer.

This position is classified as security-sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215, Texas Education Code.
