Police Officers perform responsible protective service work involving a variety of general or support duty police assignments; does related work as required. Much of the work is performed under emergency conditions and involves considerable personal hazard. Work is performed under regular supervision.
The Police Officer has completed Basic Law Enforcement Training in the State of North Carolina, OR has two years of full time sworn officer experience out of state, OR has obtained the Military Occupational Specialty for a Military Police and served two of the last five years as a Military Police Officer. Individuals that are currently attending Basic Law Enforcement Training in the State of North Carolina will be considered for this position.
The City of Jacksonville recognizes relevant education and experience above and beyond the requirements for the position.

The hiring range is $45,377.49 to $55,587.43.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks
Enforcing laws; investigating crimes; controlling traffic; collecting evidence; issuing warrants and summons; preparing reports.

Required Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and completion of basic law enforcement training.
Possession of an appropriate drivers license valid in the State of North Carolina. Possession of Basic Law Enforcement certificate issued by the State of North Carolina. Possession of or ability to acquire CPR, MDT-DCI, Radar and Intoxilizer certifications. Must meet and maintain minimum training and experience requirements for position as established by the department and the State of North Carolina.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Some knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures; some knowledge of the geography of the City and location of important buildings; some knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear reports; ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; skill in the use of firearms and the operation of an automobile; ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with associates and the general public.

The Police Officer is required to attend Basic Law Enforcement Training as part of their requirements to becoming sworn police officers for the City of Jacksonville. The following questions pertain to admission requirements set forth by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Educational and Training Standards Commission (12 NCAC 09B.0203).
