Essential Duties and Responsibilities
A. Must successfully complete the New Hampshire Police Academy or otherwise receive New Hampshire full-time police certification.
B. Effects an arrest; forcibly if necessary; using handcuffs or other restraints; subdues resisting suspects using maneuvers/approved weapons and resorting to the use of hands; feet; and other approved weapons in self-defense.
C. Exercises independent judgment in determining when:
there is reasonable suspicion to detain;
probable cause exists to search and/or arrest; and
force may be used and to what degree.
D. Safely and effectively operates; during the day and night; a law enforcement vehicle through emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits; in congested traffic; and on unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog; smoke; rain; ice; and snow.
E. Communicates effectively and coherently by having adequate hearing to understand normal conversations:
over law enforcement radio channels; while initiating and responding to radio communications;
to comprehend shouted commands in an emergency situation;
to operate a telephone; and
to follow testimony and questioning in court.
F. Pursues fleeing suspects; and performs rescue operations which may involve:
quickly entering and exiting law enforcement patrol vehicles;
lifting; carrying; and dragging heavy objects;
climbing over and pulling up oneself over obstacles;
jumping down from elevated surfaces;
climbing through openings;
jumping over obstacles; ditches; and streams;
crawling in confined areas;
balancing on uneven or narrow surfaces; and
utilizing bodily force to gain entrance through barriers.
G. Loads; unloads; aims; and fires handguns; rifles; and other Department firearms from a variety of body positions and under conditions of stress; which justify the use of deadly force; and at levels of proficiency prescribed in certification standards.
H. Performs searches of people; vehicles; buildings; and large outdoor areas which may involve the feeling and detection of objects; walking for long periods of time; detaining people; and stopping suspicious vehicles.
I. Engages in law enforcement patrol functions that include such things as working rotating shifts; walking on foot patrol; and physically checking the doors and windows of buildings to ensure they are secure.
J. Demonstrates effective communication skills in court and other formal settings.
K. Detects and collects evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and infractions and that indicate the presence of dangerous conditions.
L. Endures verbal and mental abuse when confronted with the hostile views and opinions of suspects and other people encountered in an antagonistic environment.
M. Performs rescue functions at accidents; emergencies; and disasters to include:
N. Processes and transports prisoners and Involuntary Emergency Admittance (IEA) persons using handcuffs and other appropriate restraints.
O. Extinguishes small fires using fire extinguishers and other appropriate means;
P. Reads and comprehends legal and non-legal documents written in the English language; including the preparation and processing of such documents as citations; affidavits; and warrants.
Q. Processes arrested suspects; to include the taking of photographs and obtaining a legible set of fingerprints.

A. Education and/or Experience
A high school diploma or its equivalent is required of all persons in this position.
An Associate's degree or higher in Criminal Justice or the behavioral sciences is preferred.
Previous experience is not required; though full-time New Hampshire-certified police officers are preferred.
Military experience is helpful.
B. Language Skills
Ability to read; write; speak; and understand English is essential.
Must be able to read and comprehend court decisions; laws; rules; regulations; and complex directions.
Ability to present information effectively and respond to specific questions from the general public is essential.
Ability to read; write; and/or speak another language is highly desirable.

H. CERTIFICATES; LICENSES; REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid New Hampshire motor vehicle driver's license.
Must possess and maintain a valid certification as a full-time police officer in New Hampshire.
Must complete all annual training requirements of the NH Police Standards & Training Council and the Keene Police Department.
Must establish legal residence in New Hampshire within six months of appointment and must live within a thirty minute response time to the City border.
Police officer(s) assigned to handle a canine must be certified within twelve months as canine handlers.
Physical Demands
A. Applicants must be able to pass a detailed medical examination as prescribed in NH Police Standards & Training Council Rule Pol 301.04; the accompanying Medical Screening Guidelines and Rule Pol 404.06; for Ongoing Medical Suitability for Physical Fitness Testing.
B. Applicants must be able to pass an initial physical fitness test a prescribed in the NH Police Standards and Training Council Technical Assistance Manual.
C. Incumbents; hired after January 1; 2001; must be able to pass Ongoing Physical Fitness Testing as required by the NH Police Standards & Training Council Rule Pol 404.07.
D. Must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position of Police Officer.
Work Environment
A Police Officer may work indoors outdoors or in a vehicle for extended periods of time. Police Officers must work outdoors in extreme weather conditions and at any time of night or day. May be required to work in areas with a risk of chemical radioactive or other type of contamination fire explosion gun fire or motor vehicle accident. May be required to work on foot or bicycle for extended periods of time. May be exposed to infectious disease. Must work all shifts on a rotating or other basis all days of the week and without regard to holidays. In emergencies must work long periods without relief
