Description Benefits Job Description Summary Police Officers provide 24-hour police services on campus and respond to requests for services. Officers report and/or investigate criminal and non-criminal activity occurring on campus, and off campus when requested by the Portsmouth Police Department. Officers are part of the educational process. They speak on topics such as sexual assault, drugs, crime prevention, and traffic safety. They develop and maintain a positive relationship with students, faculty and staff in order to ensure the safety and cooperation of the entire campus community.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities Functions • Performs law enforcement duties including: detection and prevention of crime, and the enforcement of state and local laws, rules and regulations • Patrols and safeguards the university system properties and surrounding areas; conducts traffic investigations; conducts criminal and non-criminal investigations • Provides public assistance to students, visitors and staff; partakes in the educational process by speaking on topics such as sexual assault, drugs, crime prevention, and traffic safety

Duties and Responsibilities • Performs law enforcement duties including: detection and prevention of crime, and the enforcement of state and local laws, rules and regulations • Responds to all calls received on shift, takes proper action and prepares accurate reports • Secures the scene of crimes and accidents, conducts preliminary investigations, gathers evidence, interviews witnesses, and prepares accurate reports • Issues court citations for parking & traffic violations; appears in court when necessary; makes arrests • Prepares cases for prosecution and testifies in court; obtains and/or serves warrants or subpoenas; takes custody of and transports prisoners • Patrols and safeguards the university system properties and surrounding areas • Performs investigative duties on crimes, accidents and non-criminal incidents when necessary • Patrols the University on foot, cruiser, or by other means on regularly assigned shift, enforcing federal, state and local laws and ordinances • Investigates fire and other security alarms and controls traffic at fires, accidents, sporting and cultural events, parades, etc. • Inspects buildings, vehicles, etc., for security and identifies all persons in buildings after hours • Provides public assistance to students, visitors and staff • Speaks on topics such as sexual assault, drugs, crime prevention, and traffic safety • Provides safety escorts or safety patrol when requested • Provides vehicle (motorist) assistance by jump starting vehicles and unlocking vehicles • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and visitors contacted in the course of work.

Minimum Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Good interpersonal skills to be able to communicate verbally and in writing with a variety of publics

Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications (EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE) • Current O.P.O.T.A. Certificate • AED/CPR & First Aid Certificate • Drivers License • Maintains firearms proficiency pursuant to OPOTA standards • FEMA Incident Command Certification at IS-100 within the first year
