The City of Elkins Police Department is actively recruiting new officers to help fulfill its mission of providing public safety and maintaining order-while upholding the U.S. Constitution and the West Virginia Constitution. We encourage all interested individuals to submit a full application to be considered for the upcoming Police Civil Service Testing, whether you are a certified officer or not.

RECRUITMENT INCENTIVES - EARN UP TO $20,000!

For WV Certified Officers:

• $15,000 incentive paid upon hiring
• $5,000 additional incentive after two years of satisfactory service

For Uncertified Candidates:

• $3,000 incentive upon successful completion of the WV Law Enforcement Academy and certification
• $1,500 additional incentive after two years of satisfactory service

Returning Elkins Officers:

• For eligible reinstated officers, the City will cover any outstanding contractual obligations owed to another police department.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Enforce city, county, and state laws; initiate investigations
• Patrol and respond to calls to protect life and property
• Issue citations, make arrests, and direct traffic
• Collaborate with law enforcement and emergency services
• Operate tactical equipment; conduct accident investigations
• Maintain detailed reports and records
• Engage in public hearings, media events, and community outreach
• Support departmental policies, budget, and operations
• Perform other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be at least 18 years old on the day of the written exam
• Must be a U.S. citizen
• Must pass a physical exam, drug screening, and law enforcement qualification tests
• Must have a valid driver's license
