Description
The Gaston County Police Department was created by Legislative Act on July 1, 1957 and began operation with a chief, a secretary and 23 sworn officers. At that time the Department was primarily responsible for providing police service to the unincorporated areas of the county. Since that time, however, additional duties and responsibilities have been given to the Gaston County Police. Today, the Department employs 153 sworn officers who provide police services to a community of approximately 90,000 residents and spanning an area of over 270 square miles that along with the unincorporated areas of Gaston County also includes providing police services to the incorporated towns of High Shoals and Spencer Mountain.

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $16.88 - $20.04.
The duties listed below are not all of the duties that may be assigned but are those that are considered as essential for an employee to perform:
Entering police records into appropriate computerized database including: Citations, Warning Citations, Pawn Tickets, Motor Vehicle Accident Reports, Field Interviews, and Tow Sheets. Merge digital Case Reports, Supplements and Arrests into the Records Management System. Check for NIBRS errors and make corrections.
Answer, transfer, refer and assist telephone callers. Take telephone messages and deliver by paper, email or telephone call. Greet and assist citizens at the window with referrals, notifying appropriate departmental resources as needed. Process mail and fax requests, sign for packages, and distribute subpoenas to officers.
Enter, Modify, Locate and Clear Missing and Wanted Persons, Stolen/Recovered Firearms, Stolen/Recovered Vehicles, Stolen/Recovered Articles into the National Crime Information Center database. Complete Second Party Check to verify accuracy of the record. Make inquiries through the Division of Criminal Information on Driver's Licenses, Vehicle Registration Plates, Administrative Office of the Courts, and Criminal Histories. Inquire, Accept, and Assign warrants into the NCAWARE database.
Scan, sort, and import additional paperwork that needs to be added to a case file (statements, lab reports, autopsy reports, pictures, etc.). Type case file label and file case. File case reports, citations, tow sheets, field interviews, motor vehicle accident reports, pawn tickets, domestic violence/ex parte paperwork, and property sheets. Pull or print court cases and grand jury court cases for officers.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED Certificate
1 year of clerical experience.
The position requires the physical ability to sit for extended periods of time and to perform ongoing production-oriented operation of keyboard devices or VDTs (video display terminals) where speed, accuracy, and volume of work are the primary factors.
Must become DCI certified within 90 days of employment.
