THE OPPORTUNITY
Police Sergeants are responsible for direct supervision over all personnel of the police department assigned to their division. Considerable independent judgment, initiative, and understanding must be exercised in interpreting orders, rules, policies, and regulations. The Sergeant will set an example for all officers and follow the department's core values of integrity, accountability, and transparency.
The ideal candidate will be a collaborative professional with excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills. The candidate should have an exceptional customer service demeanor and strong written and verbal communication skills. The candidate must be professional in directing and interacting with members of the public, sworn law enforcement agencies, attorneys, judges, community partners, and administrative staff during routine interactions and in stressful situations. The candidate should have a demonstrated history of leadership, strong job knowledge, above-average attention to detail, a history of self-motivation, and an aptitude for teaching and mentoring others.
This position requires the flexibility to work hours needed for the safety of the Town including shift work, evenings, weekends, and on-call.
JOB SUMMARY
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Coordinate and oversee the functions and activities of the assigned personnel.
- Implement and communicate directives, policies, and procedures issued by the Chief of Police, ensuring assigned personnel receive necessary guidance and information.
- Exercise supervisory authority in a fair, impartial, and professional manner.
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of all police procedures, general and special orders, rules and regulations, policies, Town ordinances, and State laws.
- Issue clear, concise, and lawful direction to assigned personnel in accordance with department rules and regulations.
- Inspect and monitor personnel uniforms, equipment, and assigned vehicles to ensure standards of professionalism, safety and readiness; initiate requests for replacement items as needed.
- Assign officers to patrol areas or areas of responsibility; relay and explain special orders and information.
- Complete annual performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback and coaching.
- Maintain patrol schedules, assign overtime shifts as necessary, and review and approve time-off requests.
- Supervise assigned personnel's performance in the field and provide training, guidance, and mentoring.
- Supervise and review the preparation and maintenance of various reports and records.
- Perform patrol and enforcement duties as needed to ensure adequate staffing and operational coverage.
- May be assigned supervisory responsibility for investigations, Field Training Officers, or departmental training programs.
- May be assigned to coordinate Ride Along Program.
- Assist with or conduct internal investigations and follow up on citizen complaints.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of five (5) years of law enforcement experience.
- Current Colorado POST Certificate in good standing.
- Must have a valid Colorado Driver's license.
- Current Field Training Officer status is highly desired.
- Demonstrated record and commitment toward professional self-development along with the success of supervising personnel is strongly preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Considerable knowledge of the principles of police administration and supervision and the ability to apply these principles to field operations and administration of the department.
- Problem-solving and community policing.
- Principles, practices, and techniques of crime prevention, and law enforcement, including investigation, patrol, traffic control, juvenile delinquency control, record keeping, and care and custody of persons and property.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, regulations, and departmental rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of CCIC/NCIC rules and regulations in addition to security awareness.
- Methods and techniques of research, statistical analysis, and report presentation.
- Provide administrative and professional leadership for the department.
- Effectively formulate and administer sound departmental policies.
- Properly interpret and make decisions in accordance with laws, policies, and regulations.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, resourcefulness, and leadership in the administration of departmental personnel and in dealing with Town officials, outside agencies, the public, and the media.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, and the public.
- Determine community needs and maintain positive relationships and a positive image within the community.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Skill in the operation of an automobile, and in the application, use, and care of firearms.
