Performs and supervises general duty or specialized sworn law enforcement and public safety activities while fostering a culture of cooperative engagement with the community, to promote the protection of life and property, and the prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes, through the equitable enforcement of applicable local, state, and federal laws, as well as MCCCD policies.
Some assignments within this classification may be assigned at the District. The Police Chief reserves the discretion to reassign Sergeants to different work locations/shifts as operational needs require. Assigned job duties, tasks, work functions may be assigned by the Police Chief.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
Possession and maintenance of a valid Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) certification as a Peace Officer in the State of Arizona, including the satisfaction of all qualifications (age, citizenship, background, psychological, ethical, medical, or otherwise) required for such certification, at the date of and subsequent to the date of hire. A valid certification is to indicate that the individual is authorized to engage in enforcement duties, carry a firearm, wear or display a badge, make arrests, perform patrol functions, and operate a marked police vehicle. Certifications that are restricted are not considered valid for the purpose of initial hire. Waiver appllicants accepted.
Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Arizona Driver License (Class D) with an initial and ongoing driving record to the satisfaction of MCCCD.
Current CPR/First Aid certification is required for the duration of employment within this classification.
Travel: Travel to various locations within or adjacent to the District is required to perform the essential functions of this classification.
Essential Functions
Positon/placement is at the discretion of the Police Chief
Plans, organizes, assigns, supervises, reviews and evaluates the work of staff ; Completes monthly notes/evaluaions/reviews for assigned employees. positon/placement is at the discretion of the Police Chief
Participates in hiring, discipline and termination activities
Identifies training needs and opportunities; provides staff training and mentoring
Supervises, oversees and participates in the enforcement of laws, ordinances, rules and regulations; maintains communication with Lieutenant, supervisors.
Develops, implements and facilitates crime prevention programs
Develops, implements and facilitates emergency preparedness and response procedures, plans and protocols for the District
Evaluates effectiveness of plans and programs to ensure compliance with federally mandated protocols and standards
Collaborates with and provides guidance to District and college resources regarding identification of critical business processes, development of continuity plans and event responses
Deters and prevents crime by patrolling buildings, facilities and properties; responds to emergencies, service calls and critical incidents; provides protection and safety of life and property
Investigates criminal activity; arrests, detains or subdues offenders; conducts searches; seizes and impounds property and evidence
Serves as a representative on committees and liaison with allied public safety agencies
Prepares and reviews routine and ad-hoc reports and related documentation
Develops, recommends and implements operating policies, practices and work standards
Adheres to and ensures compliance with applicable policies and procedures
Organizes and/or maintains records and logs according to established procedures
Presents testimony and evidence in court, as required
Provides assistance with the most complicated public safety enforcement work of those supervised
Keeps assigned tools and/or equipment in clean and safe working condition
Performs other duties as assigned; participates and coordinates community activties on campus; ensures knoxoboxes have required equipement; keys and access
Conducts daily patrol of campus for at least 1/2 of work shift on average. Interacts with employees, co-workers, community members, students, and visitors.
