Job Description

Organization Overview: Researchers in the Laboratory of Genetically Encoded Small Molecules are working on projects related to the human microbiome, bacterial small molecules, and host-microbial interactions. The lab's research is focused on identifying bacterial genes, pathways, and molecules that influence host-cellular functions and developing these host-microbial interactions into novel treatments for human disease. To this end, we focus on three major areas of research: 1) high throughput screening of bacterial metabolites and genes to identify effector functions, 2) mouse models of inflammatory and metabolic diseases, and 3) in vivo validation of bacterial metabolites and genes in human cohorts. Overview:

The Postdoctoral Associate will use methods from molecular biology, organic chemistry, and microbiology to access bioactive natural products and their respective biosynthetic gene clusters from the soil. Will be responsible for using a range of techniques, including molecular biology, tissue culture, animal work (mouse), and chemistry.

  • Design and execute independent and collaborative research projects.
  • Maintain strong organizational practices, attention to detail, and accurate research
  • Communicate effectively and work both independently and collaboratively
  • Engage in scientific writing and dissemination activities, including opportunities to lead first-authored manuscripts and contribute to collaborative publications and literature reviews
  • Perform related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested
Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, biology, or a related field
  • Ability to independently conduct untargeted metabolomics studies and/or phylogenetic analyses of microbial communities in microbiome samples.
  • Strong organization skills, attention to detail, and ability to maintain accurate records
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced research environment

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in multi-step natural product synthesis, medicinal chemistry, small molecule library development, compound characterization, and/or structure activity relationship optimization
  • Experience in preparative and analytical chromatography and structural analysis of organic molecules
  • Experience in peptide synthesis
  • Experience with metabolite discovery and characterization

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on various factors, including but not limited to organizational budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The hiring range provided represents The Rockefeller University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Clinical research hospital
In 1910, Rockefeller scientists founded the nation's first hospital devoted exclusively to experimental medicine. The Rockefeller University Hospital's only patients are participants in clinical trials building on basic research findings from Rockefeller labs. This "allows the university to maintain an unbroken spectrum of research, from basic to clinical," says Joshua Lederberg, Nobel laureate and Rockefeller president emeritus. Unburdened by constraints of standard patient care, the hospital is a vital component of Rockefeller's commitment to accelerating basic research findings on their route from bench to bedside for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. Studies are under way on AIDS/ HIV, obesity, hepatitis C and addictive diseases.
