    The Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Scholar to join the laboratory of Dr. Jaroslaw W. Zmijewski. The successful candidate will participate in NIH- and DoD-funded translational research investigating the molecular and metabolic mechanisms regulating innate immunity, macrophage function, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), pulmonary fibrosis, aging, and host defense against bacterial infections.

    The candidate will perform independent and collaborative research using advanced molecular biology, immunology, cell biology, and animal models of lung injury. Responsibilities include designing and conducting experiments, analyzing and interpreting data, preparing manuscripts for publication, presenting research findings at scientific meetings, contributing to grant applications, and mentoring graduate students and research trainees.

    Required Qualifications

    • Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in Immunology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Physiology, Pulmonary Biology, Pharmacology, or a related biomedical discipline.
    • Publication record in peer-reviewed journals.

    Experience in one or more of the following areas:

    • Immunology and innate immune signaling
    • Macrophage biology and inflammation
    • Lung injury, ARDS, pulmonary fibrosis, or infectious diseases
    • Molecular and cellular biology techniques
    • Flow cytometry, microscopy, and animal models
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
    • Preferred qualifications include experience with single-cell RNA sequencing, extracellular vesicle biology, metabolic analysis, or bioinformatics.
