PostgreSQL Database Administrator
Experience: 8+ Years | Location: US Remote (EST Time zone)
Job Summary
We are seeking a highly experienced PostgreSQL Database Administrator to design, implement, and maintain robust, scalable, and secure database environments. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in performance tuning, high availability architecture, and enterprise-scale database operations, with the ability to mentor junior team members and drive best practices across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain PostgreSQL database instances across production, staging, and development environments
- Design and implement backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies
- Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and optimize queries, indexes, and configurations
- Implement and manage high availability (HA) and replication solutions
- Ensure database security, including access controls, encryption, and compliance with regulatory standards
- Plan and execute database migrations, upgrades, and capacity planning
- Automate routine DBA tasks using scripting tools
- Collaborate with development teams on schema design, query optimization, and data modeling
- Troubleshoot and resolve production database incidents, often under time-sensitive conditions
- Maintain documentation for database architecture, procedures, and runbooks
- Participate in on-call rotation for critical production support
- Mentor junior DBAs and provide technical guidance across teams
Mandatory Skills
- 8+ years of hands-on experience administering PostgreSQL in production environments
- Strong expertise in PostgreSQL architecture, internals, and performance tuning
- Proven experience with replication (streaming, logical), clustering, and high availability solutions (e.g., Patroni, repmgr, Pgpool-II)
- Deep understanding of backup and recovery tools (pg_dump, pg_basebackup, pgBackRest, Barman, WAL archiving/PITR)
- Expertise in query optimization, indexing strategies, and EXPLAIN/ANALYZE plan tuning
- Solid experience with database security: roles, permissions, SSL/TLS, encryption at rest/in transit
- Strong scripting skills (Bash, Python, or Perl) for automation
- Experience with monitoring tools (pgAdmin, pg_stat_statements, Prometheus/Grafana, Datadog, or similar)
- Solid understanding of SQL and PL/pgSQL for stored procedures, triggers, and functions
- Experience with version upgrades and major migration projects
- Strong troubleshooting skills for performance, connectivity, and data integrity issues
Preferred Skills
- Experience with cloud-managed PostgreSQL services (AWS RDS/Aurora)
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, Ansible)
- Knowledge of other RDBMS/NoSQL systems (MySQL, MongoDB, Oracle) for cross-platform environments
- Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
- Experience with data warehousing or ETL pipelines
- PostgreSQL certification (e.g., EDB Certified PostgreSQL Associate/Professional)
- Familiarity with connection pooling tools (PgBouncer, Pgpool-II)
- Knowledge of PostGIS or other PostgreSQL extensions
Education
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
