Power Generator Mechanic II (SPOT Gen Mechanic)

Position Summary

Seeking a full-time Power Generator Mechanic II. This role operates and maintains power plant and spot power generators and equipment under the direction of the Lead Generator Mechanic III, joining a team that provides best-in-class services to help clients solve complex challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain power plant/spot power generators and equipment under the direction of the Lead Generator Mechanic III.
  • Report special occurrences such as emergency outages and corrective actions to the Lead Generator Mechanic III; anticipate unscheduled load changes and detect early indications of equipment malfunction to maintain continuous service.
  • Troubleshoot and perform low/entry through medium/intermediate level repairs to gensets, powered support systems, vehicles, and major components (engines, generators, alternators, gears, compressors, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical components).
  • Perform generator services in accordance with manufacturer recommendations (250-hour, 500-hour, etc.).
  • Assist with rebuild and/or overhaul - top end, in-frame, and complete - of gensets, powered support systems, and other major components.
  • Assist in the control and distribution of mechanical and electrical systems for powered support equipment, including their major mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components.
  • Troubleshoot and repair diesel, gasoline, and/or multi-fuel engines (PMCS, breakdown repairs, periodic maintenance) ranging from 3 to 16 cylinders and up to 2MW of power.
  • Assist with isolating generators and bypassing faults during power production malfunctions, or shedding low-priority loads when full service cannot be maintained, to ensure personnel and equipment safety.
  • Ensure correct testing and isolation procedures are followed before working on de-energized high voltage networks or switchgear.
  • As workload/mission/staffing levels dictate, assist with daily power plant or spot gen operations, including bringing gensets online/offline, synchronizing/paralleling gensets, taking hourly readings, fueling, electrical distribution installation/maintenance, and facility upkeep.
  • As workload/mission/staffing levels dictate, assist MV/LV electrical/power plant operations teams with installation/removal of electrical distribution equipment.
  • Attend formal OEM-specific genset and/or controls training as required.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • 5-7 years of experience as a Generator Mechanic II or equivalent role.
  • Must have SPOT generator experience and the ability to work independently with appropriate safety practices.
  • Caterpillar Mech II Mechanic Certification or equivalent.
  • Experience in medium to large scale operation and maintenance of prime power diesel gensets (50-60 liter engines).
  • Experience in maintenance, repair, operation, and troubleshooting of genset systems (fuel, induction, cooling, controls, exhaust, engine internal and peripheral) ranging from 15kW to 3MW.
  • Experience using measuring devices such as Vernier calipers, micrometers, and dial bore gauges.
  • Ability to read and use technical manuals, illustrations, diagrams, schematics, and similar guides for assembly, troubleshooting, and layout of powered support systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of the mechanical and electrical makeup of powered support systems, including standard diesel generators, genset synchronizing/paralleling controls, communication/monitoring systems (e.g., Pulse SCADA), and switchgear.
  • Experience providing prime power O&M services to clients.
  • Hands-on experience inspecting, testing, and repairing electrical system components including generators, transformers, transfer switches, switchgear, PLC controls, and fuel monitoring/delivery systems.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards for electrical and mechanical trades and related safety practices for installation, maintenance, and repair of power generator systems.
  • Ability to rescue an injured person from an electrical conductor.
  • Knowledge of Lockout/Tagout procedures.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply information in equipment manuals, facility documents (drawings/specifications), O&M manuals, SOPs, emergency response procedures, and safety data sheets.
  • Understanding of power generation equipment startup/shutdown and basic maintenance procedures.
