As the independent system operator for the region, they seek skilled professionals to support their critical mission — ensuring a reliable electric grid, efficient markets, open access, and retail choice. With a diverse organization, employees bring a wide range of experience and expertise to excel in the current energy landscape while preparing for the future.

Job Summary

This role focuses on evaluating voltage ride-through (VRT) and frequency ride-through (FRT) performance to support power system reliability and ensure adherence to company requirements. The engineer will perform reliability studies, review technical submissions, collaborate with market participants and internal stakeholders, and support the development of processes and procedures related to IBR performance and regulatory implementation.

Job Description

  • Perform reliability power system studies, including steady-state and dynamic stability analyses, to assess the impact of inverter-based resource VRT and FRT performance on the company system.
  • Review technical submissions related to VRT and FRT maximization to ensure compliance with company requirements and standards.
  • Support the development and implementation of processes and procedures associated with NOGRR 245, future rulemakings, and related company revision requests.
  • Provide technical support to cross-functional teams developing processes for receiving and evaluating IBR performance submissions.
  • Coordinate with internal departments to ensure compliance requirements related to VRT and FRT are effectively implemented and maintained.
  • Work directly with market participants to explain requirements, facilitate submissions, and support implementation of modifications or exemptions.
  • Review and evaluate requests for extensions or exemptions from VRT and FRT requirements and provide recommendations to management.
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert on inverter-based resource VRT and FRT performance topics.
  • May represent the organization in stakeholder meetings and industry working groups.

Skills Required

  • Power system analysis and modeling
  • Knowledge of inverter-based resource behavior and grid reliability concepts
  • Technical problem-solving and analytical thinking
  • Regulatory compliance and standards interpretation
  • Cross-functional collaboration and stakeholder communication
  • Process improvement and documentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience performing reliability power system studies.
  • Background in renewable generation resources, including wind, solar, or battery energy storage systems.
  • Experience analyzing voltage levels, relay settings, or protection systems.
  • Familiarity with engineering and simulation tools such as Python, PowerWorld, PSS®E, or PSCAD.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • For Level 1 Engineer: No additional work experience required beyond degree requirements.
