The Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) Nurse is responsible for preparing patients for elective outpatient orthopaedic surgery by completing comprehensive preoperative assessments, coordinating medical clearances, providing patient education, and ensuring all required testing and documentation are completed prior to surgery. The PAT Nurse works collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, primary care physicians, specialists, and the surgical team to promote patient safety, optimize surgical outcomes, and minimize cancellations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Complete comprehensive preoperative nursing assessments via telephone and/or in-person.
Review patient medical history, current medications, allergies, and surgical history.
Identify patient risk factors and communicate concerns to the anesthesia team and surgeon.
Coordinate required preoperative testing including laboratory studies, EKGs, imaging, and specialty clearances.
Obtain and review medical records, test results, and physician clearances prior to surgery.
Ensure patient charts are complete and surgery-ready according to facility and regulatory standards.
Educate patients regarding preoperative instructions, medication management, fasting guidelines, arrival times, and postoperative expectations.
Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, scheduling staff, and clinical teams to facilitate efficient patient care.
Communicate any abnormal findings or missing documentation promptly to the appropriate provider.
Document all patient interactions accurately within the electronic medical record (EMR).
Maintain compliance with ASC policies, CMS, AAAHC/Joint Commission standards, HIPAA regulations, and infection prevention protocols.
Assist in reducing day-of-surgery delays and cancellations through proactive patient preparation.
Qualifications
Current unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Georgia.
Current BLS certification required; ACLS preferred.
Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience; ambulatory surgery, orthopaedics, PACU, pre-op, or perioperative experience preferred.
Strong knowledge of preoperative assessment and perioperative nursing principles.
Excellent communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
Proficient with electronic medical records and Microsoft Office applications.
