JOB SUMMARY
The JSYEC Pre-K Associate Teacher is a frontline program staff member responsible for the direct supervision and safety of children ages 4–5 within designated areas of the BGCGM’s Pre-K program at the JSYEC. Reporting directly to the Pre-K Director, the Associate Teacher supports the delivery of daily activities, maintains a safe and structured environment, and ensures children are actively engaged and appropriately supervised at all times. This is a hands-on, child-facing role focused on implementation rather than program design or staff leadership. The Associate Teacher is a dependable, caring presence in the classroom and program spaces who helps the daily schedule run safely and smoothly.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide direct, attentive supervision of Pre-K children in assigned program areas at all times.
• Implement daily activities, transitions, and routines as directed by the Pre-K Director and Lead Teacher.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized environment within assigned areas in accordance with licensing and safety requirements.
• Redirect and guide children's behavior using the program's approved positive behavior guidance strategies.
• Support children during transitions including arrival, dismissal, meals, restroom routines, and activity changes.
• Engage actively and positively with children to support social-emotional development and a sense of belonging.
• Communicate any behavioral concerns, accidents, injuries, or incidents to the Pre-K Director promptly.
• Assist with setup and cleanup of activity materials, learning spaces, and program areas.
• Help maintain accurate attendance and ensure all children are accounted for during all program activities.
• Follow all organizational policies, licensing regulations, and health and safety procedures.
• Support family drop-off and pick-up procedures in a welcoming and professional manner.
• Participate in required staff meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Pre-K Director.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Must be at least 18 years of age or older
• Ability to pass criminal background screening and obtain required fingerprinting
• High school diploma or GED required
• Minimum 1 year of experience working with young children in a childcare, preschool, or youth program setting preferred
• Basic understanding of child development and age-appropriate behavior for children ages 4–5
• Demonstrated ability to engage positively and patiently with young children
• Ability to follow direction and implement program activities as designed by supervisory staff
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Maintain personal auto insurance policy with a minimum of liability coverage.
• Ability to remain calm, attentive, and professional in a fast-paced, high-energy environment
• Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain upon hire
• Regular attendance required
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
• Actively engage with and supervise young children in classroom, outdoor, and activity settings throughout the day
• Stand, walk, kneel, and sit on the floor for extended periods of time.
• Get down to and up from floor level regularly to interact with children at their level
• Respond quickly and appropriately in emergencies to ensure child health and safety
• Maintain energy, patience, and attentiveness throughout extended shifts in a high-energy environment
• Work in various settings including classrooms, playgrounds, and outdoor spaces
• Lift and carry children, supplies, or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
• Perform physical tasks such as bending, kneeling, reaching, and climbing stairs
• Use general office and classroom equipment including computers, printers, and educational technology
