Job Summary

City of Bellevue Crossroads Community Center is seeking a Pre-School Assistant Teacher for our pre-school program. This program is designed for children ages 3-5. The primary responsibility of the pre-school assistant is to provide supervision and safety of the children always, under the guidance of the pre-school teacher. Each day the assistant and teacher are responsible to check the children in/out of the pre-school classroom, insure that a Child Waiver Form is completed by the parent/guardian and provide art, singing, circle time, exploration and structured games and activities to the children. The assistant will work with a pre-school teacher to develop a cooperative, supportive and enthusiastic atmosphere. The ideal candidate would have experience working with pre-school and/or elementary age children.

Duration and Hours:

The pre-school is from 9:30a.m. - 12:30p.m. Monday through Friday. The assistant will be expected to arrive at 9a.m. In addition the preschool is offered the first Saturday of every month. CPR/First aid training will be offered once a year, attendance is mandatory. Attendance is key to this position, days off are Saturday and Sunday only.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists teacher in preparing, creating, and/or adapting instructional materials centered on seasonal activities
  • Helping to assess the needs of the children served.
  • Recognize and respond effectively to emergencies.
  • Knowledge of developmental stages of pre-school children.
  • Assists in maintaining stringent safety procedures always, regardless of location.
  • Assists teacher in maintaining, and creating any necessary paperwork related to position, such as sign-in sheets, daily reports, and/or incident and accident reports.
  • Experience and/or training are desired, specific to the responsibilities and competencies of this role.
  • Assists teacher checking children in/out daily of class daily.
  • Encourages children to follow rules and routines.
  • Assists teacher in setting up the room daily.
  • Assists teacher in cleaning up the room daily.
  • Encourages children to take turns and share.
  • Assists with circle time
  • Helps managing transitions (going from one activity to the next)
  • Taking children outdoors or in the gym for play time daily with the teacher.
  • Encourage children to use words to resolve conflicts.
  • Carries out work responsibilities effectively under pressure of deadlines, difficult situations, interruptions and new or emergency situations.
  • Encourages creativity of children and helps foster a positive environment in the classroom.
  • Assists in performing tasks to enhance the effectiveness of the learning environment.
  • Report all problems and concerns immediately to the teacher and/or Recreation Coordinator or the Center Supervisor.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years old, with a high school diploma.
  • Two or more years of experience in recreation activity or program or in the general recreation field
  • Or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Experience supervising young children.
  • Must be enthusiastic, energetic, reliable and trustworthy.
  • Strong communication skills, oral and written.
  • Be sensitive to the needs of the children.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Must pass the Criminal Background check.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain First Aid/CPR certification prior to start date.

Supplemental Information

Physical Demands:

  • Work involves walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or set up arts/crafts, games, play sports, physically play and demonstrate games, work with arts and crafts materials, jump and run.

  • Indoor and outdoor recreational environment subject to noise, distractions, seasonal heat, adverse weather conditions and periodic interruptions.

  • Exposure to extended periods of direct sunlight and/or cool and damp weather is possible.

  • Strong stamina

  • Assist with program set-up and take-down.

  • Employee may be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 40 pounds.

  • Employee may be required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.

  • Ability to work with large group of young children.

  • Be able to respond and react to an emergency in an effective manner.

Definition of a Variable Employee:

  • Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire
  • Hours may vary depending on the prep time needed and clean up time aside from class teaching hours.
  • Note: Will be considered full-time and eligible for medical coverage if hours average 30 hours per week or more over a 12-month measurement period (130 hours per month).
