Position Overview

Our client is seeking a Precast Design Engineer to support the design, detailing, and constructability of precast and prestressed concrete systems for industrial and commercial applications. This role will be accountable for structural design, engineering documentation, 3D modeling coordination, drawing review, production support, and technical problem-solving across the project lifecycle. The position will work closely with engineering leadership, detailing personnel, production teams, quality control, and field crews to ensure design intent is translated accurately into fabrication and erection.

The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience with precast concrete design and detailing, strong structural engineering judgment, and the ability to evaluate practical solutions rather than simply identifying constraints. This role is well suited for a professional who enjoys working across engineering, detailing, shop production, and field execution, with room to help strengthen internal capabilities and support the development of less experienced team members.

Why Join Our Client?

Our client is a long-established, privately held construction and specialty precast organization serving complex industrial and commercial markets. The company operates with a blend of technical discipline, in-house production capability, field execution, and design-build experience, giving engineers meaningful exposure to the full lifecycle of precast work rather than only isolated design tasks.

This position offers the opportunity to work on varied, non-commodity precast projects where practical engineering, constructability, and continuous improvement matter. Candidates who value stability, long-term career growth, access to experienced leadership, and the ability to influence how work is designed, built, repaired, and improved will find a strong fit in this environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform structural design and analysis for precast and prestressed concrete components, including beams, columns, wall panels, piles, foundations, and related systems.
  • Develop and review 3D models, shop drawings, erection drawings, calculations, and Bills of Materials for accuracy, constructability, and code compliance.
  • Coordinate with engineers, detailers, production teams, quality personnel, and field crews to align design intent with fabrication and erection requirements.
  • Interpret structural, architectural, and MEP drawings to develop accurate precast solutions and identify coordination issues early.
  • Respond to RFIs, submittals, design revisions, and technical questions throughout active projects.
  • Evaluate production or quality issues and provide engineering guidance on repair methods, compliance requirements, and constructability concerns.
  • Support value engineering, process improvement, and practical design approaches that improve efficiency without compromising safety or quality.
  • Mentor detailing personnel and help strengthen team knowledge of engineering intent, modeling practices, and precast detailing standards.

Requirements

  • 5-8 years of experience in precast/prestressed concrete design, detailing, structural engineering, or closely related construction environments.
  • Strong understanding of precast and prestressed concrete behavior, load paths, connection design, production methods, and erection considerations.
  • Proficiency with 3D modeling or detailing software such as Revit, AutoCAD, Tekla Structures, SolidWorks, or comparable platforms.
  • Ability to prepare, review, and interpret engineering calculations, shop drawings, erection drawings, and construction documents.
  • Working knowledge of applicable structural codes and standards, including IBC, ACI, and PCI requirements.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across engineering, detailing, production, quality, and field teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, resolve technical issues, and provide practical recommendations in an active project and production environment.
  • Willingness to engage directly with shop and field teams to review work, explain design intent, and troubleshoot constructability concerns.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) status with a path toward licensure.
  • Direct experience working in or closely with a precast production plant.
  • Experience with prestressed concrete, PCI-certified production environments, bridge-related precast components, or specialized structural precast systems.
  • Advanced experience with Tekla, Revit-based precast tools, or other precast-focused modeling and detailing platforms.
