A day in the shop
You roll in at 6:00 a.m., coffee in hand, to a family-owned precision machine shop where craftsmanship matters. The job travelers and blueprints are waiting. You study orthographic drawings and engineering notes, plan your setups, and confirm materials on hand. You load stock, program the mill or lathe with reference and zero points, mount the three- or four-jaw chuck and tooling, and run a first article. Measurements check out, so you kick off production—turning, facing, grooving, drilling, knurling, and thread chasing—keeping a close eye on tolerances from first piece to last.

- Keep operations safe by following all shop procedures and regulations.
- Complete preventive maintenance to keep equipment reliable.
- Document production and quality data; communicate clearly at shift handoff.
- Pursue learning opportunities to expand your machining knowledge.
