Day in the Life

You arrive to a clean, quality-driven shop and open the day’s print package. Before the first chip flies, you’re mounting fixtures, loading or verifying the CNC program, and dialing in tooling so that the first piece comes off right. Calipers, micrometers, indicators, and gauges live at your station, because you’ll run a thorough first-article, confirm dimensions to tight tolerances, and make smart offsets to lock in process stability for the run.

As production moves, you watch tool wear, listen for changes in machine performance, and adjust feeds and speeds to keep parts on-size and cycle times efficient. Operators look to you for guidance; you help them understand work instructions, answer questions, and step in to troubleshoot setups or tooling issues to minimize downtime. Throughout the shift, you document setups and in-process checks, and you keep your area safe, orderly, and audit-ready.

What You’ll Handle

  • Set up CNC mills, lathes, or multi-axis machines: install fixtures, load/verify programs, and set tooling.
  • Perform tool changes and apply offsets; fine-tune processes to maintain dimensional accuracy and part quality.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, work instructions, and inspection criteria; apply GD&T where applicable.
  • Complete first-piece and in-process inspections using precision instruments.
  • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and setup challenges to reduce downtime and boost throughput.
  • Support machine operators during production runs and provide hands-on guidance.
  • Monitor tool wear, machine health, and process consistency; make proactive adjustments.
  • Maintain accurate setup sheets and production documentation.
  • Follow all safety, quality, and housekeeping standards.

What You Bring

  • Previous CNC setup experience in a precision machining environment (required).
  • Proven capability setting up CNC mills, lathes, or multi-axis equipment.
  • Blueprint literacy and confidence with engineering drawings and tight tolerances.
  • Working knowledge of tooling selection, offsets, feeds, and speeds.
  • Proficiency with calipers, micrometers, indicators, and gauges.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and practical problem-solving skills.
  • Comfort working independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced shop.
  • Tool and Die experience preferred.

Preferred Background

  • Tool and Die or related tooling experience in manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with GD&T and structured inspection processes.
  • Experience with fixture setup, process improvement, and complex machining troubleshooting.
  • Consistent commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
